Dave,,,the following solutions to some of America's critical problems were recently tweeted out by Marjorie Taylor Greene...which ones would you classify as coming from an insurrectionist?

Become energy independent, including using the same safe nuclear energy that runs France

Bring competition back to medical care and get rid of Obamacare, which ruined your existing insurance and lost you your doctor

Stop letting China control important medicines.

Stop Congress from spending like a drunken sailor (only a dishonest drunken sailor with a stolen wallet)

Stop immediately bailing out big companies with our tax dollars

Start spending American dollars on America, rather than funding the world, including governments hostile to us

Shrink the federal government by getting rid of unnecessary bureaucratic agencies

Stop giving American military protection away for free to countries such as Germany who just whine about what bullies we are

Put troops on America's southern border rather than shipping them overseas to said ungrateful countries

I have to say, pertaining to the recent spate of comments directed at MM re. her listing the the myriad of maladies wrought by the recent executive office holders. Right or wrong it is unfair to unload our individual frustration with how American politics and politicians have manipulated the population via the media to polarize American voters. Polarization is one of the tools of their trade. Politicians use information manipulation to build support for themselves. The more followers they can muster the more attention, (money) they can attract. Once they decide which side of any issue they are on, usually based on party loyalty, they can mobilize the zealots to do outrageous acts and proclaim even more outrageous physical acts. The system is broken. Criminals have hijacked our government and are engaged in misinformation campaigns. What drives this unabashed attempt to control our government is nothing new, but the continious bombardment of misinformation and confusing attacks can't be good for us. What has it accomplished? With all the media outlets choosing up sides, its hard to see the truth for the lies. And it just gets worse. Trying to make sense of it is stupid. In the end the system is basically about money and turning that money into power which gets the real freedom they want. When the majority of Americans delight in the scandels and outrageous behaviors of our "leaders", that spells the end of the ideal our forefathers and mothers had in their minds of how our country should be. We've evolved into a graffiti culture. To create this culture one has a limited time to contribute an identity or idea before you have to either give up your freedom or get away from those who would lock you in a cage. So bring it on I say. Make every night a full on Bad Brains concert. Don't be afraid of the person in the mask.

The other day I was watching the Tigers beat the Yankees as the center field camera would frame the battery I couldn't help notice the billboard ads for FanDual sports betting. Now I am quite certain that a few of you have wondered when did gambling become sanctioned by the pro sports world. So, that being the case, when will MLB lift the ban on Pete Rose's Hall of Fame induction. Free Pete! If the lord will forgive us our trespasses, then why do the commissioners of pro sports think they are better than God?

On another note Dave, your support of life at all of its stages is truly admirable, however you seem not to know that for over 40 years, there have been literally thousands of grass-roots, non-profit organizations which were started by individuals to help empower women and men to make healthy life choices consistent with the God-given intrinsic value of every human life. I personally know of the assistance provided by these crisis centers having volunteered for one for twenty years. They provide information, ultra-sounds, assistance and referrals for medical care, housing, education, clothing, food, legal assistance (especially with adoption), etc.  Most importantly they offer compassionate and caring emotional support, so desperately needed by those who feel uncertain and alone.  Through the intevening years, more volunteer groups have sprung up to offer post-abortion counselling for both women and men who have struggled with past choices as well as mentoring groups which have also been an important addition, such as "Mommies Matter" where pregnant Moms who are in need of on-going emotional support and friendship are paired with a volunteer Mom/Grandmother during the first year after their child's birth

Jack M....you cut me to the quick with your mention of the Tigers beating the Yankees. My niece who is now living in Detroit posted a picture of herself at that game.  She was hoping to watch Cabrera hit his 3000 that night, but was disappointed that it didn't happen.  I did see he managed to get into the 3000 club when the Tigers played the Rockies.  Good for him!  I guess he started another club as the only player in MLB history with 3000 hits, 500 home runs and a Triple Crown.....even my idol Mickey Mantle didn't achieve that!!  Keeping my fingers crossed that the Yanks can hold onto first place for a long while!

Mary Margaret,

As to your two last posts - working backward:

As a life-long opponent of abortion, I have long been aware of most of those organizations you mentioned. My late father-in-law (Dr. Tom Hughes) was the perennial President of the Central Ohio Right to LIfe group, and during those years, my late father was always the single biggest financial contributor. I only brought up Mira Via  because it strikes me as one of the most effective ways of dealing with the problem in a way that could hardy be considered controversial. It is run without any hint of societal malice or political controversy. I only wish I could have convinced my younger daughter's Alma Mater (Xavier in Cincinnati) to incorporate such a facility in their new campus (on ground totally gifted to them by some large corporations). Sadly, my suggestion was rebuffed in an almost insulting way.

Your second one offers me an even greater challenge. I have known and agreed with most of the list you included. So why is she wasting her public platform on these crackpot conspiracy statements like,

the Q'non claims about Dems running a world-wide cabal of child slave trading,

that anyone wanting someone else to be vaccinated should be shot,

that Nancy Pelosi shoud be killed,

that massive voter fraud occured (in several different states),

and lately, her phone calls supporting the attack on the Capital?

Are we to accept anyone claiming prinicpals we support, even though they are coupled with this utterly unhinged madness. If so, then I am out.

This kind of wild nonsense and dangerous threats are sabotoging the entire conservative argument.

Could it be any more obvious that she and her crackpot pals are doing soooo much more damage than helping? I believe she and her kind (Cawthorne - Gosar - Boebert, Gaetz, etc.) are killing us.

Is that so difficult to grasp?

Let's have more of Joe's "incisive" roadside signs.

In a rare gesture of solidarity, I have to agree with MM (and, I’m ashamed to say, with MTG) that I think nuclear should play a role as we transition away from fossil fuels.

On the other points in MM's post, let’s just say I couldn’t disagree more.  And especially with the one on health insurance, which was utterly messed-up long before Obamacare.

Ok you're right, mm. She makes a lot of great points. So I'll let her off the hook for the treason. It's the spelling I can't abide. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

WASHINGTON — It was less than two weeks before President Donald J. Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress would have what they saw as their last chance to overturn the 2020 election, and Representative Scott Perry, Republican of Pennsylvania, was growing anxious.

“Time continues to count down,” he wrote in a text message to Mark Meadows, then the White House chief of staff, adding: “11 days to 1/6 and 25 days to inauguration. We gotta get going!”

It has been clear for more than a year that ultraconservative members of Congress were deeply involved in attempts to keep Mr. Trump in power: They joined baseless lawsuits, spread the lie of widespread election fraud and were among the 147 Republicans who voted on Jan. 6, 2021, against certifying President Biden’s victory in at least one state.

But in a court filing and in text messages obtained by CNN, new pieces of evidence have emerged in recent days fleshing out the degree of their involvement with the Trump White House in strategy sessions, at least one of which included discussions about encouraging Mr. Trump’s supporters to march to the Capitol on Jan. 6, despite warnings of potential violence. Some continued to push to try to keep Mr. Trump in office even after a mob of his supporters attacked the complex.

“In our private chat with only Members, several are saying the only way to save our Republic is for Trump to call for Marshall law,” Representative Majorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, wrote to Mr. Meadows on Jan. 17, 2021, misspelling the word “martial.”

Thoughts about Elon Musk purchasing Twitter?

04/26/22 12:44 PM #11039

John Maxwell

Mary Margaret, get over it, the Yankers took two in a three game series. Cabrera's quest has been a pure distraction. But now that its accomplished the Tigers can begin to play ball. They begin an eleven game road trip which I believe they will take six or seven. As far as Musk's Twitter purchase: Tweeting is the current state of the art social media platform performing at full speed and a high capacity. There are billions of dollars worth of satellite and communications equipment already in use. Looks like a pretty versitile purchace. I wonder what he will rename it. Maybe 'Free Speech', for which he will probably charge a bundle.

"A hotel in Germany uses 3D carpets to prevent guests from running in the passage," or so this post from FaceBook suggests. I would fear what this might do to someone, not running, but just staggering along from one too many Octoberfest brews. In fact, I imagine that someone even completely sober might find himself caroming off the wallls. No brews required.

UN General Secretary Guterres made an absolutely profound statement today after meeting with the Russians.

hey kids! time for another round of "choose your news"!!!! The above headline is from the Washington Post. The one below is from  The New York Times. I also included a bit of the nytimes story, in part because of a great quote and a cool metaphor. mm

The economy contracted in the first quarter, but underlying measures were solid.

The U.S. economy contracted in the first three months of the year, but strong consumer spending and continued business investment suggested that the recovery remained resilient.

Gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, declined 0.4 percent in the first quarter, or 1.4 percent on an annualized basis, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That was down sharply from the 1.7 percent growth (6.9 percent annualized) in the final three months of 2021, and was the weakest quarter since the early days of the pandemic.

Quarterly changes in real gross domestic product

Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis

By The New York Times

The decline was mostly a result of the two most volatile components of the quarterly reports: inventories and international trade. Lower government spending was also a drag on growth. Measures of underlying demand showed solid growth.

Most important, consumer spending, the engine of the U.S. economy, grew 0.7 percent in the first quarter despite the Omicron wave of the coronavirus, which restrained spending on restaurants, travel and similar services in January.

“Consumer spending is the aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean — it just keeps plowing ahead,” said Jay Bryson, chief economist for Wells Fargo.

Joe: thanks for the spelling bee humor.

Thank goodness my beloved is a Montessori saint. She keeps teaching me patience or I'd be a lot grumpier as a teacher myself.

And by the way Marie Montessori was no saint.

But my sweetheart is.

Mary Margaret: I absolutely promise to be on my best behavior, and maybe not even to argue the point. But I am curious, given your conservative stance on the vaccine, what your take is on the fda's plan to ban menthol cigarettes.

I just think it's an interesting ethical distinction to make - between a governing body taking steps to protect people from a disease as opposed to protecting them from the results of a behavior.

This just in (excerpted from an interview I believe that was yesterday)

I realy didn't think Margarie Taylor Greene could stoop any lower!

The good news for House Republican leaders is that they’re no longer having to answer questions about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene recently speaking at a white nationalist event. The bad news for GOP leaders is that the right-wing Georgia congresswoman has created a new controversy for them to deal with. HuffPost reported:

Right Wing Watch released a video excerpt of the interview yesterday, which showed Voris asking Greene about domestic Catholic organizations that help resettle undocumented immigrants and refugees.

What it is, is Satan’s controlling the church, the Republican congresswoman said. “The church is not doing its job, and it’s not adhering to the teachings of Christ, and it’s not adhering to what the word of God says we’re supposed to do and how we’re supposed to live.”

Catholic League, which has earned a reputation as a very conservative voice in religio-political affairs, was not pleased. Its president, Bill Donohue, released a written statement that read in part, “Satan is controlling the Catholic Church? She needs to apologize to Catholics immediately. She is a disgrace. We are contacting House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy about this matter. He’s got a loose cannon on his hands.”

I must confess, I seem to have missed that part of Christ's teachings.

Mary Margaret Clark (Schultheis)

Well Mike, since you promised to be on your good behavior ðŸ˜Š.....I will attempt to answer your question, but first I should perhaps clarify that I never believed that the mRNA therapies should be "banned", I simply believe that people should be provided the proper informed consent before receiving any medical treatment, and further, that people should not be bribed or coerced under threats of losing their healthcare, employment, education, etc. to be administered any medical treatment against their will.  As for the banning of menthol cigarettes or banning any product....that seems a slippery slope...after all, NYC tried banning 16 oz sugary sodas and it was struck down under this court ruling.  https://lawreview.law.miami.edu/york-soda-ban-struck-unconstitutional/

04/28/22 07:08 PM #11048

MM, if you oppose banning any “product”, you then surely you oppose banning the sale of crack cocaine, fentanyl, psychedelic mushrooms, or RU-486 (the abortion pill)?

Holding all my calls while we enter the next phase of the Liturgical Calendar - the Holy season of the NFL Draft.

"Good afternoon, and thank you for calling Broncos Draft Headquarters.

If you are a Denver Broncos fan, press #1 and rest assured in the knowledge that you are 'saved'.

If you would like to be a Denver Bronco fan, please press#2, pledge a subsantiail indulgence donation, and pray like hell.

If you were once a Denver Bronco fan and would like to jump back on board now that Russell is here, press #3, get down on your knees, grovel a bit, say three Hail Marys, and get in the back of the line (you idiots).

If you could care less about the Broncos, press #4, go sraight to hell (or Jacksonville), do not pass "GO" and do not collect your $200.00.

04/28/22 08:06 PM #11050

Mary Margaret Clark (Schultheis)

John, if you take an abortion pill your intention is to purposefully take an innocent, defenseless life....that is a totally different matter.  Alcohol, fentanyl, menthol cigarettes, etc. have the potential for harm, but they are not primarily used to intentionally cause one's death, except for in the case of suicide.  Of course we have to have laws to protect the greater good, but that is why we must allow for free speech so that all sides of issues can be heard and debated. And then we must allow for honest elections so that there can at least be the hope that people will have the free choice to vote for reasonable representatives who will defend the Constitutional natural rights of all citizens.

04/28/22 08:35 PM #11051

James Hamilton, M. D.

John,

As for crack cocaine, there is no medical or legitimate use for it. Fentanyl has medical uses for anesthesia/analgesia and severe pain control. Psychedelic mushrooms are under some medical/psychiatric investigation and ( unfortunately) are legal for  (recreational) sale in Denver. RU 486 is a legal (also unfortunately) drug. I suspect that those who are in favor of early abortion are happy about that.

Jim

Jim and MM – I’m not the libertarian here  -  I’m Ok with government banning, or at least discouraging, products that are bad for people’s health with the hope that most of the time government will get it more or less right.  And my previous post was not meant to endorse or argue for any of the “products” mentioned, all of which are now illegal or highly restricted or have been in the past.

Instead, I meant to point out that many conservatives claim to be libertarians and, especially now, that position has a superficial populist appeal for many people - get the big, bad government off our backs!  But scratch a little deeper and you find that the same people who think the government should stay out of people’s lives are only too willing for government to ban or regulate "products" or behaviors that they take issue with.

From Jonathan Turley:

"With Musk's purchase of Twitter, politicians and pundits have moved from corporate censorship to calls for good old-fashioned censorship. Hillary Clinton told her European allies to pass a massive censorship law to “bolster global democracy before it’s too late.”

"Homeland Security already has a public relations staff that answers questions as well as dozens of offices that release public information. Yet, Secretary Mayorkas wants an actual Disinformation Governance Board to put an imprimatur on what is true and what is false. ...The entrance of the Executive Branch into such supervision of facts would seem a matter for legislative debate on the use of public funds for such a purpose. ...Citizens can now choose between lies and truth under the watchful eye of the Biden Administration's Disinformation Governance Board. It is not clear what the consequences may be to those who run afoul of the DGB and the MSM, but one should choose wisely. ..Democrats are falling back to their final line of defense...and are finally being honest about their past use of corporate surrogates. They are now calling for outright state censorship.'

Freedom now has become synonymous with tyranny as democracy embraces censorship.  What can possibly go wrong?  Sounds eerily similar to the task of the "Ministry of Truth" in Orwell's "1984".
