What does all of this mean for the U.S. in the coming months?  Are we Americans prepared for more supply chain disruptions?

Sure Signs of Springtime in the Rockies

It was a beautiful morning today in Colorado Springs and so I grabbed my camera and drove a mile or so over to our neighborhood treasure, Ute Valley Park.

Signs of spring were finally showing themselves as I wandered through some of the trails looking for grandscapes and smaller evidence of the dawning of this season.

Passing the Lutheran church a few hundred yards from the park, I always look for the cute and poignant message that the pastor always displays along the road, this one for Easter:

Just a few feet from the parking lot I saw Pikes Peak peeking above the many hills and rock formations in the park displaying the receding snow that had earlier this month been quite thick:

The small pond which is usually a favorite of ducks and other waterfowl was devoid of its ice covering and had surrendered some of its water to the drought conditions that are currently plaguing Colorado and the Southwest:

The thick, tall grasses that populate some of the open areas of the park formed waves as a result of winter snows and the strong winds that have blown through this area these past two weeks:

Despite cold nights, occasional spring snows and lack of other forms of moisture, I found the scrub oak bushes replete with terminal buds - a sure sign that spring is on its way!

From an 1989 essay by William McKibbon about how skewed our perceptions are, as opposed to the objective realties of the world around us. I'm not preaching - well maybe a little -- I just know how hard it is to write clearly and applaud it when I see it done.

It's quite a length essay. The second section below is its conclusion. It strikes me as quite idealistic. But I like the sound of it nonetheless.

The world is not as large as we intuitively believe—space can be as short as time. For instance, the average American car driven the average American stance—ten thousand miles—in an average American year releases its own weight in carbon into the atmosphere. Imagine every car on a busy freeway pumping a ton of carbon into the atmosphere, and the sky seems less infinitely blue.

Our comforting sense, then, of the permanence of our natural world—our confidence that it will change gradually and imperceptibly, if at all—is the result of a subtly warped perspective. Changes in our world which can affect us can happen in our lifetime—not just changes like wars but bigger and more sweeping events. Without recognizing it, we have already stepped over the threshold of such a change. I believe that we are at the end of nature.

By this I do not mean the end of the world. The rain will still fall, and the sun will still shine. When I say “nature,” I mean a certain set of human ideas about the world and our place in it. But the death of these ideas begins with concrete changes in the reality around us, changes that scientists can measure. More and more frequently, these changes will clash with our perceptions, until our sense of nature as eternal and separate is finally washed away and we see all too clearly what we have done.

I understand perfectly well that defiance may bring prosperity, and a sort of security—that more hydropower will mean less carbon dioxide, and that genetic engineering will help the sick, and that much progress can still be made against human misery. And I have no plans to live in a cave, or even in an unheated cabin. If it took twelve thousand years to get where we are, it will take a few generations to climb back down. But this could be the epoch in which people decide at least to go no farther along the path we have been following—when we make not only the necessary technological adjustments to preserve the world from overheating but also the necessary mental adjustments to insure that we will never again put our good ahead of everything else’s. This is the path I choose, for it offers at least a shred of hope for a living, eternal, meaningful world.

As birds have flight, our special gift is reason. Part of that reason drives the intelligence that allows us to master DNA or build big power plants. But our reason could also keep us from following blindly the biological imperatives toward endless growth in numbers and territory. Our reason allows us to conceive of our species as a species, and to recognize the danger that our growth poses to it, and to feel something for the other species we threaten. Should we so choose, we could exercise our reason to do what no other animal can do: we could limit ourselves voluntarily, choose to remain God’s creatures instead of making ourselves gods. What a towering achievement that would be, so much more impressive than the largest dam—beavers can build dams—because so much harder. Such restraint, not genetic engineering or planetary management, is the real challenge. If we now, today, began to limit our numbers and our desires and our ambitions, perhaps nature could someday resume its independent working. Perhaps the temperature could someday adjust itself down to its own setting, and the rain fall of its own accord. ♦

The right-wing fringe lunatic stuff has gotten pretty horrific - and I don't just mean the hundreds of death threats against officials who differ with thier point of view.

I urge you to listen to this heroic woman (Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow) defend herself in the Michigan Statehouse against the outrageous lies of a GOP collegue Senator Lana Theis ("tice").

Senator Lana Theis turned her back on this entire speech - what uttter cowardice??

Dave – Thanks for sharing that clip, very powerful. We can only hope that more people standing up like this may stem the slow slide towards narrow-mindedness and embrace of autocracy that seems to be looming.

But moving on to less formidable topics – I don't know if this clip below is old news to you folks, since it was put up on Youtube eight years ago, but it was new to me. I had never even heard of this musical group, OK Go, and from the camera slate at the beginning of this video, I assumed it must be another South Korean or Japanese group like BTS. It turns out they have been around since 1998, and are from Chicago, then transplanted to Los Angeles. But the jaw-dropping reason I am posting this video of theirs is because of the insane choreography of this piece that will have Busby Berekely spinning in his grave with appreciation because of its astonishing use of hundreds of extras with umbrellas and perfect timing, and all done in one amazing take via a drone camera. Not to mention the clever riding ability demonstrated by the band members riding on the whatever sort of riding gizmos they are on. Clearly they are playing around with changes in the film speed at times, and the low-angle panning shot at the end is blurred, and maybe the very end sequence may have been digitally enhanced, but my God, what an effort for a music video of their song, “I Won’t Let You Down.” They certainly didn’t. . My hat's off!

Enjoy!

Dave, I'll add my thanks to Mark's for posting the video of Michigan legislator Mallory McMorrow calling out her opponent for the accusation (in a fundraising letter) that McMorrow is involved in pedophilia. This utter lie is now a recurring theme used by candidates on the right that would be utterly laughable if so many Republican voters didn’t take the charge seriously.

There has to be a penalty for candidates (and there are many) who glibly and routinely lie about this and other things like the “stolen” 2020 election.  These people are utterly devoid of principle and care only about winning.  The level of misinformation peddled by the right is staggering.

Isn't it just a bit disingenuos to promote the notion that those to the left of centrists are purists who never engage in deception, lies, questionable ethics and moral principles? Some of us can remember

  • the 2012 lie that the attack on Benghazi was the result of a little known YouTube video
  • the women’s march the very next day after the 2016 inauguration.
  • the 4 years of attacks and impeachments over a fake dossier
  • “not our president” and the “Resistance”
  • Maxine Walters telling followers to harass conservatives in restaurants.
  • the President Trump's spokesperson being kicked out of a restaurant.
  • Trump supporters getting Doxed, and fired from jobs.
  • The 2020 riots and looting while no BLM rioter or looter was ever arrested or prosecuted for destroying billions of dollars of public & private property
  • “a comedian” holding up the President’s severed head
  • a play in Central park paid with public funding, showing the mock-killing of President Trump
  • Robert de Niro yelling “F" Trump” at the Tony’s and getting a standing ovation.
  • Nancy Pelosi tearing up the State of the Union Address.
  • non-stop in your face lies and open cover-ups from the media. Think... Nick Sandman is a white-supremacist, Kyle Rittenhouse is a murderer, Brett Kavanaugh committed "rape",
  • the IRS targeting of conservative groups labeld as Tea Party or Patriots
  • five Republican Senators shot on a ballfield.
  • every so-called comedy show turned into nothing but a Trump hate fest.
  • a Trump top aid verbally assaulted in two DC restaurants.
  • people banging and clawing on the Supreme Court doors during Kavanaugh hearings.
  • American citizens labeled as racists, fascists, extremists, etc. for simply casting their vote for Trump
  • 2 weeks to slow the spread, 6 ft. distance, lockdowns, cloth/surgical masks work to prevent aerosol spread of virus, mRNA vaccines work to prevent infection
  • dismissal of content of Hunter Biden's laptop prior to 2020 election
  • corporate media promotion of Jessie Smollett lies about racially inspired hate crime

The list goes on, but you get the idea.

Ok MM you got my attention.

Who's doing that disengenous thing you are talking about?

How does your list forward any constructive conversation?

I feel like showing it to friends of mine to ask them if they do, indeed, harbor all or some of those assumptions.

Given that I write about the arts, teach at a liberal arts college, live in an area that is very gay friendly, and lean left myself, I am sure I'd be in a good position to do such a survey.

It would generate introspection and a few healthy discussions.

But for the moment I would just say sure, we are all inclined to favor those with whom we philosophically ally and assume that those across the table from us are - in many cases literally - holier than thou, and profess to be so, the piece you recently posted here about "pagans" being a good example.

I'm more of a mind to quote John Lennon: Whatever gets you through the night.

So I concede your points above, all of them, and then erase the board and say, rather than generalize about each other, let's move on to discuss issue on their particular merits. And that word, ""particular," as opposed to general, has been on my mind over the past few years as I see certain issues that we generalized about play out from the ground level. Hearing my significant other, who teaches in a public Montessori orented grade school, talk about how political machinations and arguments over covid play out on a day to day basis in a classroom has taught me a lot. Seeing the struggles my dear friend, who is still coping with what are beginning to look like lifelong symptoms of her Covid infection, has made all the debates about the vaccine ring rather hollowly.

It's so easy to criticize and philosophize and find fault from a distance, but - deep sigh -  it's what old farts like ourselves are good at. I try to catch myself in the act, and it isn't easy.

MM, where is your sense of proportion?  None of the incidents you mention, even assuming your interpretation of them is correct (and there are many I would dispute), begins to rise to the level of the assault on our democracy that Trump’s “stolen election” claims (culminating in the events of Jan. 6), represent.

And some of your points are outright wrong – the “fake dossier” played absolutely no role in the two impeachments, and the mainstream media refused to report on any of the dossier charges because they could not be verified.

The one really horrific incident you mention (even more horrific than “President Trump's spokesperson being kicked out of a restaurant”) was the shooting of  “Five Republican senators shot on a ballfield”.  However, no Senators were shot - what actually happened was that Republican Congressman Steve Scalese and three other people were shot.  Scalese and one other person were seriously injured (Scalese was unable to return to Congress for several months).  That any member of Congress was shot is horrific enough, but as I think pretty much everyone agrees, people who do these kinds of shootings are wackos – is it really fair to lay the blame for this on the Democratic Party?  And if you do think the Democrats are to blame, what would you say about the shooting of Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords?

And the claim that “no BLM rioter or looter was ever arrested or prosecuted” is the kind of misinformation that is everywhere on social media and right wing websites and is utterly false.  According to a USA Today fact check “over 10,000 protesters were arrested, most for low-level offenses”.

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2022/02/22/fact-check-thousands-black-lives-matter-protesters-arrested-2020/6816074001/.

The list goes on and on...

I think our democracy can easily survive “A Trump top aide being verbally assaulted in two DC restaurants” as well as all the other incidents you describe.  But when a President who has lost an election refuses to leave office as our Constitution prescribes, and when the overwhelming majority of Congressional Republicans are too gutless to speak out – that makes me fear that our democracy is in real danger.

I feel a little guilty now - I was caught up in philosophizing - don't hold me to that spelling -  and only glanced at MM's list. Some fact-checking editor I would make. And lord do we ever need fact-checkers these days given the wild wild west of the internet. (you can take that comparison both figuratively and literally. The frontier newspapers that cropped up as the west  was being won were chronically slanderous, and damn proud of it.)

In my defense I am in the middle of writing a story which makes me fuzzy headed after a while. I was going to mention it because It is about Guy Fieri, the foodie tv star with the wacky hair, who apparently has columbus ties which i am just now discovering. He is opening a new restaurant here in collaboration with a local celebrity of sorts by the name of robert earl.

The restaurant is called chicken guy.

I'm not a food reviewer usually but I do personality pieces when they come my way.

ps I met lou holtz years ago he was getting hairplants at a place I was doing a story about.

He told me the story I'd already heard about woody going for two points instead of one for spite after an osu touchdown against michigan.

speaking of fact checking there is a debate over whether it was done for spite or whether the extra point kicker was having some sort of problem.

This from today's ny times. All I can say is: Great Balls of Fire!

Are you a man worried about your testosterone levels? Hoping to give them a boost? Tucker Carlson, the Fox News host, has a solution.

A promotional video for a new installment in a video series by Mr. Carlson describes a “total collapse of testosterone levels in American men,” positing an explanation for what he and many conservatives see as a creeping loss of masculinity in today’s society.

Chock-full of oiled, shirtless men performing vaguely masculine tasks, like turning over giant tires and throwing a javelin, the video has already been widely remarked upon on social media for its bizarre erotic imagery.

But one shot in particular stands out: a naked man atop a rock pile, limbs outflung, exposing his genitals to the red light issuing from what appears to be a waist-high air purifier. Something very like the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” plays in the background.

This is the treatment proposed by Mr. Carlson’s “documentary”: Revive your underperforming testicles with red light, in particular a device made by a little known company called Joovv.

A leading endocrinologist says — no surprise — the whole thing is ridiculous, and not just because of the man receiving light therapy atop a pile of stone slabs in the dead of night.

First, there is precious little evidence that testosterone “levels are declining by roughly 10 percent per decade, completely changing the way people are at the most fundamental level,” as Mr. Carlson has said.

Studies examining changes in testosterone over time are challenging for several reasons, including difficulties in recruiting large populations of normal subjects, daily circadian changes in testosterone, and differences in testing methods over time, noted Dr. John Amory, an expert on male reproductive health at the University of Washington.

Mr. Carlson and Fox News did not respond to requests for comment.

Tied to the anxiety over testosterone is another hotly disputed assertion: that sperm counts have been declining among men in the Western world for decades. Huge numbers of studies have been done, and there is no scientific consensus on the scope of the problem or whether it exists at all.

And now for my intervention to remind Mike how easy his life in Journalism, and teaching, has been - so far.

While I was employed by the U.S. Government I was often called on to provide talks to various civic and business groups.  I was reminded of the restrictions when I came across a memo provided to all employs.  Remember this is the government, they cannot issue a memo to the specific individuals who might be affected, they had to first inform ALL employees.  This was during the period when they first informed everyone that accepting even a cup of coffee from a business we were dealing with, unless provided free to all of their employees, would be considered as having accepted a bribe.  Also when givng presentations we could not accept a meal unless it was provided to all attendees at no charge; a bribe.

Watch out Mike.

After a short layoff, I checked the forum while I was unable to log in with a new email address, and lo and behold, new gasoline on the bonfire!

 - a few thoughts; working backwards

Mike,

1) I saw the bit about Tucker Carlson's guest promoting red lights on the testicles a few days ago. Damn, why didn't I think of that? I must be getting out of touch. I'm still working on trying to releive chronic back pain with aspirin and a heating pad.

2) And then there are those new "leaked" recordings of Kevin McCarthy, trying to convince us (yet again) that either he thinks everyone on the planet with normal hearing is dumber than ditch water, or that he himslef is. I think if we ever build a "Hall of Fame for Sniveling Lying Cowards", he will deserve his own special wing in the building

Seriously, how do you have the balls ("red-lighted" or not) to attempt to get away with this stuff?

3) And then, didn't I see a post by Mary Margaret somewhere?

What a bizarre list! About a quarter of the list could be something I might be able to agree with - sort of. But the entire list leaves out any sense of balance for far worse things that our Conservative side has said done, or is trying to foist off on the American public. Why are you so worried about the left, when our own house is burning to the ground with lies, death threats, and "misinformation".

You seem to have forgotten (and your list does not include) that we had a president who;

A) Braggged that "There Is No Sin in Adultery"

B) Bragged publicly that he had "been in so, many vaginas that he feels like a brave soldier."

C) Insulted our own miitary heroes and questioned their motives, even those who gave their lives.

E) Dodged the draft himself 4 (or was it 5?) times

F) Cheated on his college entry exams

G) Lied while in office over 30,500 times,  (and it's still going on)

H) Made "Bro-love" to two of the most dangerous men on earth - Putin and the North Korean Fat Kid

I) Threatened to break up Nato

J) Disarmed Ukraine (so his buddy Manfort could make millions with his Russian Oligark buddies)

K) Fleeced thousands of people out of large sums of money with his utterly bogus "Trump University"

(Note: this is a personal favorite of mine, and has almost passed from public memory. I received a 4 year degree in Real Estate Decvelopment and Finance. (Should'a used that instead of going into R.E. Sales - lol). There are a number of principles (a couple of years worth and about 8 text books) that go into a $30,000 degreee in this field. A few years back, I drilled down pretty deep into this case, which, you may recall, he settled just before the election. (he had to) The course materals contained absolutely nothing of the many time-honored principles. It was completely bogus. It was sold with hype and false promises, including one concept that I believe is illegal in about 16 states.

L) It looks pretty obvious that he cheated local, state, and federal authorities out of taxes owed.

( L2) And Committed multiple bank lending frauds in the process)

I could go on but let's skip to the biggies

N) He clearly planned, orchestrated, and "admitted" responsibility for the ASSAULT on our nation's Capital,

O) He blatantly tried to steer post election fraudulent vote switching in several states.

* In all of your right-wing rants, We hear not one word from you about the Capital Police who were attacked, knocked down, beaten, and injured (some serioulsy) - and then publicly mocked and disgraced by Tuckerio Rose Carlson and his girlfriend, Laura Ingerwhat'sher-insult-line-today.

p.s.

I agree that young Nick Sandman was clearly set up. Several videos came out a day later that exhonerated him - different camera views (with other people nearby) showed quite a differen story. And it seems like the "Black Hebrews" were out to get him, and If I recall correctly, the the guy from the American Indian movement (forgot his name) who got in his face, admitted he was wrong within days.

And I also wish Maxine Waters would take a flying leap.

However, here is a question of how out of balance your list was. You mentioned a play where Trump's head was cut off  - yes, a horrilbe vicious thing.

So how did you leave out Paul Gosar's video showing him killing Ocasia-Cortez in an anime cartoon? I would love to hear your explanation of the difference?

And finally, can you please name one president in our lifetime that was not the butt of a steady stream of insulting jokes from every comedian worth their salt? But If it anything against Trump, it's a vicious attack.

John J. Mike Dave...........There is a steady stream of Message Forum posts which take delight in pointing out the faults of those who align with conservative views......John, in his post referred to the "level of misinformation on the right is staggering".  I only posted (#11012) to share that both sides engage in lies, deception and outrageous actions. From the day Trump won the election, there were cries from the left to say he was not duly elected by the voters because he had colluded with the Russians to "steal" the 2016 election.  Thus the fake Steele dossier.  Granted as John corrected me...the imeachments were not a direct result of the dossier, however, it is easy to connect the dots that after two plus years of non-stop, and I do mean non-stop social and corporate media peddling this lie, that the hatred of Trump increased to the point where the left would do anything to get rid of him, including two impeachment attempts,as well as to discredit every common sense thing he did which were mandates from those who duly elected him to do such as...to reduce abortions, control our borders, and reduce the stranglehold the federal government agencies had on placing insane regulations on businesses....including oil and gas. Now....before you go all of on me for sharing my personal views....I would like to just remind you all that I have said repeatedly on this forum that I voted for neither 2016 candidate and I only voted for Trump in 2020 because I knew where Biden would lead the nation...which is proving every day to be a disaster....domestic and foreign.

One other thing I would clarify from John's critique of my #11012 post is that while I never should have generalized about the arrests of BLM rioters, I can definitely report that of those arrested a vast majority had the charges dismissed or reduced despite the fact that they were permitted, by stand down orders of some police departments (including our own CPD) so as to allow the burning down and looting of private businesses.  https://www.the-sun.com/news/3123181/hundreds-blm-rioters-looters-vandals-charges-dropped/ This was justified by BLM supporters because as the lead BLM organizer of the Chicago riots stated:

“I don’t care if somebody decides to loot a Gucci’s or a Macy’s or a Nike because that makes sure that that person eats. That makes sure that that person has clothes, That’s a reparations, anything they want to take, take it because these businesses have insurance."

And she wasn't the only one justifying the billions of dollar destruction across the nation in 2020:  https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/09/04/here-are-31-times-the-media-justified-or-explained-away-rioting-and-looting-after-george-floyds-death/

There are other former classmates who have shared via email with me that they agree with many of my postings, but that they prefer not to engage in any debate on here.  I only seek to continue to voice my opinions here to balance the perspective that is the way a democratic republic works.  I concede that I may not always get it right, and expect that I will be held accountable. Which before I forget...John correctly pointed out that while five were shot, only one Republican "congressman" was severly injured, on the ballfield where 24 Repbulican Congressmen were gathered

Gotta tell you MM

I'm happy to hear that you hear from folks who agree with you.

I hope we can all agree that you can't have a democracy if you don't play by the rules and respect each other's differences.

And that both of those things, in practice, are hard as hell -- and largely and quite consciously ignored by those who would manipulate us.

I may get riled but I take no delight, ok ok I TRY to take no delight as you characterized it, in seeing mis and dis information fine tuned to play into our predjudices on either side when I see it broadcast anywhere in any form.

That's the real enemy. Of everyone. Regardless of whatever side they see themselves as being on.

I'm also thinking that if we ruled out false equivalencies some of the posts on this site would be a hell of a lot shorter.

David Mitchell

Mary Margaret,

After reading your list on post #11012, I am completely baffled that you can claim the word "balance". That post, (as all of the rest of your posts) was anything but.

I too have some off-line classmates who agree with me.

As you already know, I also oppose abortion. I do not accept one-sided "rights" where an adult human being has a right of life or death over a powerless, voiceless, un-defended, human being. Nor do I accept perfectly formed babies being tossed into plastic garbage cans - by the millions!

But I disagree completely with the way this country is going about it. (see below**)

And I favor some way of regulating our borders. But I have to aknowledge that this expensive idea of a wall (which will never solve the problem) - is an utterly ineffective waste. And avoiding our responsibilty (our past generations of supporting the subversion of justice in Central America in the early 1900's) will only put off the possibibitiy of real solutions - especially in Guatamala and Honduras. People argue that that is a long term solution that will take years to implement. I say right, so lets get started.

I believe JoBi is a rather weak moral coward when it comes to abortion. Does he have a religous conviction? Or doesn't he?  He has alwys seemd to want to be "liked". Sometimes you gotta put your foot down, regardless

And could he have botched the withdrawal from Afghanistan any worse the he did? I doubt it.

And does he need to tell members (and followers) of the "squad" to shut up and get real? I would hope so.

But I have to give him some props on our support of Ukraine - I only wish it hadn't been so gradual.

But we hear nothing of the right-wing crazyness from your "balaced" list. By your silence you seem to imply that you:

Support the attack on the Capital - and on Capital police officers who defended it?

Support the attempted "coup" - planned on a wide and well organized scale?

Agree that the election was "stolen"? (after 60 court cases finding ZERO supporting documets)

Agree with the "fake electors" trying to sneak into (5 or 6) State Capitals and illegally replace electoral vote delegates with fake documents? These are actually current local officials trying to pull this stuff!

Agree with the continued (campaign trail and rallys) diatribe of incoherant lies being told by this babbling, fornicating, cheat, whose major accomplishment in his adult life has bben to launch more than 4,000 lawsuits (some counts say over 4,500) mostly simply to attack anyone who opposes him.

Why on earth would any loyal Conservative give credence to such a scum bag? What ever happend to the Party of Lincoln? For that matter, what eve happend to a lot of good Republicans who are being threatened by Trump maniacs out of running again?

Why are you silent about the growing number of death threats from Trumpers? Are you happy to see what is happening to Conservative Rep. Anthony Gonzalez in Ohio?  (and dozens of other cases like him?)

** my comments about how we handle abortion in this country prompts me to include an additional bit of information. I may have mentioned this before but I offer it here again because it's applicable to the problem.

A small Catholic college in North Carolina - Belmont Abbey - has built a home on campus for pregnant young girls called "Mira Via" (Miraculus Way) - formerly "Room at the Inn", with enough support to help them have their babies and continue their college education. It is funded by a Knights of Columbus men's group in nearby Charlotte (and by sympathetic readers like me).

This is the kind of idea that could draw support form both sides of the argument without stoking the disagreement. This is quite the opposite of our typical teatemt of young, pregnant, un-married women in our society. Instead of calling them names and ostracizing them from "respectable" society, they welcome these frightened, often unsupported, girls into the home and offer them shelter, food,  education, support, and love - what a concept?

I'll add more about them later.

WARNING:

It appears that we may need to re-enact the mask rule in D.C.  It looks as if a form of alzhiemers is spreading through the Republican party.

Just this last week, we saw severe symptoms of memory loss striking Rep. Kevin McCarthy, just days after former White House advisor Mark Meadows realized he could not remember just where it was that he lived.

Next thing you know we'll be hearing that Marjorie Taylor Greene couldn't remember her own statements while testifying in court.

Oh golly - I guess that really did happen.

Mask Up  GOP!
