This is interesting stuff.

But just to clarify my earlier remark, Eklessia and Kirche were NOT ambiguous nor were they mis-interpreted (they may be now). The two words had clearly iunderstood, specific meanings and were intentionlaly switched at some point in the middle ages. One was a congregation or following, the other was an ediface, a building - which has now become intepreted as a religion, or religious group.

Dr. Jim, "Descended  into hell" was explained to us in an adult religion class as you have so very well stated here. It had never occurred to me before that there was no "place" to go before we were saved by Christ's Resurrection. (I very much dislike that phrase, so when reciting the Rosary, I sometimes use "Descended to the dead" instead.)

Side note: heaven, hell and purgatory are not actual "places," but spiritual states of being. And to explain to non-believers regarding purgatory, it was explained to me that most of us are not ready at time of death to instantly receive the "eternal reward," so purgatory is explained as that purification process or state of being.

My ol' man laughed at Mike's reference to "word nerd." I never though of myself that way but I guess I really am just that. I have always wondered where certain words come from, why names are chosen for children, streets, lipstick/paint colors, etc. In the last few years I have started noticing homonynms more in English language—there are so, sooooo many!   Also, I go nuts over punctuation errors in business/professional writing, especially made-up  punctuation marks uses, but not sure if that's included as "word" nerd.

OK, I'm done here (at least for awhile).

Merry Christmas to one and all.  Thank you all for the wonderful gift of friendship that has been shown though the years and has been re-ignited.

Dear Word Nerds,

I am so glad to be one of you!   This link is to a free email service that I have enjoyed for a number of years.  Check it out.  It is called A-Word-A-Day.  It also includes a quote which I frequently find interesting.

Hey everybody, I sure hope you all get what you've wished for all year. Along with a great big dose of love and joy. Have fun with your families and say an extra prayer for those less fortunate. Like my old childhood friend, Jimmy once told me, "You don't gotta be a kid to like Christmas." God Bless you all in the New Year. See you next year. Jack, Jocko, John.

And you too Jack.

I'm getting to spend mine with grandkids in sunny, balmy, Bangor Maine. (Brrrrrr!). I haven't seen a white Christmas in many years - even on some trips to Columbus. Can't wait to play with the stuff I brought them. I dare to buy gifts that are NOT electronic games or Legos.  If I'da known grandkids would be this much fun, I would'a had them first.

Mossyrock, WA...inna house.

Beautiful bright blue skies and far hills dusted with a light snow turning them gray-white. Cold but not bitter...more Nashville than 'frozen wasteland Ohio' from those memories from so many years back. Christmas music playing and Mom n Son in the kitchen going hell bent for leather to produce something special. I've stocked the firewood pile and we are ready for a day long LaVestival. Tomorrow I put the two on a train for NCal to see the inlaws and outlaws. I get to stay home and party like its 1969, dance in my PJs with the dog and cat and kill monsters on Xbox!!  Might be an extra Gin n tonic in my stocking this year, huh? Hope your holiday is full of warmth and joy this year.  You are a great group.

Well, here we are back in C-bus with Janet's family to celebrate Christmas. Rain turned to snow this afternoon after two very sunny days. Watching OSU losing to Norh Carolina on TV. This city seems to grow each time we visit, no longer the easy to navigate town it was in the '50's & '60's. But I still feel comfortable here as well as in Colorado. Nice to have two places to call home.

To the Class of '66'ers and your families, all over the world, we wish you a blessed Christmas, a healthy New Year and Happy 70th Birthdays to us all.

I get one of these every day from Flocknote explaining a section of the catechism. We are discussing this recently. Not sure why I didn't think to go there myself.  Maybe Pope Francis should read the catechism also.

596. What does "Lead us not into temptation" mean?

We ask God our Father not to leave us alone and in the power of temptation. We ask the Holy Spirit to help us know hot to discern, on the one hand, between a trialthat makes us grow in goodness and a temptation that leads to sin and death and, on the other hand, between being tempted and consenting to temptation. This petition unites us to Jesus who overcame temptation by his prayer. It requests the grace of vigilance and of final perseverance.

You wouldn't guess that a group that calls themselves The Piano Guys could do this so well (here's the link if my upload doesn't).

Thanks Clare,

Love this video. Been a Piano Guys addict for several years now. I drive with three of their albums in my CD player in the car.

Merry Christmas!

Their usual thing is juxtaposing two differedt songs from two different genres - folk song+hymn, or soft rock+classic, etc. Their coolest one may be a recent mix of three songs in one video (on You Tube) of a bunch of bag-pipers marching out to an old Castle while they play Amazing Grace, Scottland the Brave, and This is My Fight Song.

(White Christmas - snowing hard in Bangor)

p.s. I played Joseph in first grade. I think maybe Nina was Mary (help me here Nina????) and Stevie Merrill was baby Jesus. (yes, he was small). I think maybe I had one line?

Happy New Year, Frankie.

Years ago - around 1995 - when my son was very small, we had one of those years that seems, in memory, to have been unreasonably flled  with sickness and pain. Not like cancer or anything, just bout after bout of bad colds or childhood illnesses. At Christmas that year I was down with the "I had to wait for Xmas vacation to get the flu". So it was a pretty crappy year for good memories.

My mantra has always been "You gotta laugh..." and has been mostly pointed at my own mistakes and failings. It'sa big target. So last night, when I thought maybe I was having a heart attack, it scared me badly but also gave me more funny ammunition to shoot myself with. Scene: Cristmas afternoon, family far away, I begin coughing. Great, for Christmas I get a deep chest cold in a chest not all that deep. Two uncomfortable days pass - Last evening I drove to the train station to pick-up the lady and the lad from their sojourn. I was looking forward to some "Oh, you poor boy" type treatment. While waiting in the train station, along comes a young lady giving away free chicken sandwiches. Normally she gives them to the homeless but she had a few left over and decided to give them to us poor soles in the train station. "Free sandwich...I'm your man, thanks". The wife and son were very tired so I was completely shorted on the "Oh you poor boy" sentiment.

At home my chest began to hurt. "Right behind the sternum, Doc". As a card carrying hypochondriac, within minutes I was fairly certain that I would not be alive for New Years. For me, a very difficult night. Turns out the lady with the chicken sandwiches was handing out more than cold weather sustinence. Maybe I saved a homeless person from acute indigestion???

You gotta laugh! This screed is about laughing at yourself and hope - not about being ill, really !

I am guessing that 2017 was very difficult for many of us. In a few days, let's turn the clock back to "start" and hope that 2018 willl be full of love instead of nuclear war; togetherness instead of whatever we call our country these days; peace instead of white hoods and cross burnings; no bullying; far more patience for people with less and for every one of us, a year of good health and cheer. For me, one of the very good things that came with 2017 was thiis forum and the active friendship shown here. I think we should all go to Washington and show them how people of different minds can not only get along but disagree with politeness and laughter. Party On!  TL

Tim, for some unknown reason the Lord in his infinite knowledge and wisdom pick a few people and give them a sense of humor where not only to share but to be able to laugh at themselves and thier foibles without taking offense because if someone did not point it out fast enough for a laugh we would and the laugh would be bigger.. No one would ever poke fun of the brainyacks as they weren't funny to begin with. we all need in these times to drop the false wall of political correctness, enjoy the company of others and most of all stop taking ourselves so serious. Thinking on things that devide us such as relegion and politics, we all must accept that the other person feels as strongly about his or her stands as we do. In accepting we then can enjoy a discussion and come to the conclusion that no matteer who is in office, no matter, they have very little effect on us and our quality of life. The common tread of the government is taxes more or less of them. Other than that our lives continue the same. Think about that , other than taxes has much changed in our lives since school. No! Some are more successful than some, some found the path of the Lord, some found peace while others just did their things but other than the progress of man wew have stayed basically the same. With the approach of 2018 lets all revel in the fact that we are who we are and love and accept our friends for what makes them our friends . Lets pray that lifes problems disappear, joy and peace abound and we concentrate on fun. and this ends this months homily. LOrd bless us all.

Thank you, Frank. I enjoyed that!

I have to say that I am enjoying "here" as one of my happy places. I hope it continues throughout the year.

Tim,

I thought you vets knew better than to eat stuff from "Roach Coaches"! Of course, freebees are hard to pass up!

Your comments, and Frank's, are well taken and reflect the feelings of myself and many of us. It is delightful that we can have diverse views on so many topics and still maintain, as well as create new, friendships. This Forum should receive an award, perhaps the Janie Blank Peace Prize, for bringing us all together again.

To all and your families I add my sincere wishes and prayers for a safe, healthy and happy 2018. I hope we continue to use this Forum to discuss and share old times, new times, thoughts, successes, disappointments and dreams for years to come.

Jim

Better late than never.....

I just heard this song sung by a young couple at my church this morning - subbing for our usual band. This version is Lauren Daigle (who I love -- she sang "How Can It Be?"). Today's version was simpler than this arrangement, just a wife with amazing vocal and husband at the keyboard. They are an interracial couple about late 20's from another church on Hilton Head.

THEY WERE SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!

I think they caught the entire congregation off guard and really knocked us out! I know this is a week late but I am so moved by this morning's version I just had to post this as a close "copy". And may the theme survive the day, the week, and the year to come. Let these words reside in our hearts through time.

"Come and see what God has done"
