Ummmm,,,,,,,,,,,,, in other news,,,,,

Rienz Priebus has just asked to be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Timothy Lavelle

Dave, this trilogy by Follett is The Century Trilogy. WWi and WWII so far.

Also, I heard he was changing his name to Rienz Previous and will appear on Dancing With the Stars with partner Sean formerly of communications.

Lkike that little boy said, "yeah, well, pretty sure the king is naked."

Tim, I only read the first of the series - but it's great. Interestingly, it ties right in with Downton Abbey, which I had become addicted to at the same time as I was into Follet's book. Both contain a lot about the collapse of the old society of western Europe after the devastation (and the idiocy) of WW1 - a war that never should have happened if it weren't for the arrogance and utter stupidity of a great many proud politicians and military officers in England, France, Germany, Russia, and Austria. --- (sound familiar?)

As for the artist formerly known as Sean, I hear he can do a mean "stroll", but his buddy Reince really stinks as a "point guard". I don't think Cleveland will trade for him.

Joe -- really! catfish in Utah?  R U kidding me?  No man!  Go for the Rocky Mountain Oysters.

Dave, you would be a disaster on Twitter laugh but I agree with your message and I like your style!  May the gods hear you!!

Dave- I agree with Jack who simply said "Whew!"

But not being the laconic sort myself, a weird thought came over me as I was reading your post. I hope what I am about to say does not come off the wrong way. I do not mean this to sound critical, just something I wonder about, because to me there is an inescapable, implied burden percolating below the surface when you write like this.  Of course even though the person you were describing remained unnamed, we all knew at once whom you were talking about because of the many other postings you have done about your father.  And once the "whew, what an incredible individual" moment passed for me, I could not help but wonder if this giant of a man did not inadvertently create way too big a a pair of shoes to fill. Did he know what a shadow he was casting--that some sixty years hence his actions would stll be forefront in his child's conciousness, in a good way, to be sure, but inesacpable all the same? I some times worry for you Dave, as I read these marvellous posts you do about your Dad.  For all of the sublimity of the past, does it not sometimes get to be too much to live up to? I both envy your childhood, and at the same time feel blessed that I was not challenged with shoes so big that I would know I could never begin to fill them. It makes me wonder what it would have been like to have been someone like Robert Todd Lincoln. Proud, to be sure, but no doubt it would be a mighty struggle to feel at peace with one's own meager efforts in life. But then again, maybe your efforts have not been meager at all. I don't really know you well enough to judge. Maybe you are casting a big shadow over your own children that they will talk about years later.

Please excuse my ramble. I just wanted to say, "Whew, now there was a father." But also think, "Whew, glad he wasn't my father. That would have been too much to live up to."

I echo the Whews! that you are getting Dave and agree with Mark about casting a big shadow. You can be very proud of him for sure but this man was also a tortured soul in his own way.  We all do things in our own way. None of us should beat ourselves up for not being as good as we think we should be. We all do the best we can  at any given time. Sometimes in retrospect it seems we could have done better but hindsight is not reality. Take the good he gave you and let go of the rest. We love you. Keep up your writing. Keep all your essays. At some point it should be a book. It's cathartic for you and entertaining and informative and a good history lesson for others. What is this forum for if not to have a good rant now and again? As to painting with a broad brush, yes we need to always dig a little deeper and not just make a generalization that could be dead wrong.  Another thing I'm impressed with in our forum is our ability to listen and not be judgmental while views different than our own might be expressed. We treat each other as old friends and don't let differing views come between us.

Completely off the subject, but just gotta throw this in;

Right now down at the Ohio State Natatorium, one of my niece's children is in the lead for the national junior diving champoinships.  His name is Collin Breuer, from San Antonio, TX. He's ony 11 and he is amazing! My youngest daughter Meg, who lives in Cincinnati is there with a bunch of her younger Hughes cousins, relaying videos to me by phone.

-------

Ooops! This afternoon he has slipped to 10th place.

He's still phenomenal! Watching him do double flips with half twists of a 32 foot platform is amazing!

Dave,

Collin sounds like Olympic material!

(I wonder what "degree of difficulty" would have been assigned to my feet-first jumps while holding my nose off that 16 foot platform at the old Olympic Swim Club??!!)

Jim, I think I meant 16 feet. Sorry. But wasn't that scary enough?

Nina Osborn (Rossi)

Excellent post MaryAnn!  I knew a family in the 80's with a transgender child!  Before anything like that was talked about.  We all knew the precious boy  was really a girl. Parents always were there for their child. And I had 2 students who transitioned during their high school years. More love less hate!!!

I was just completely offended  by Dave Mitchell in an email accusing me of offending devout Catholics. I do apologize to anyone I may offended but I was relating a story from a dear friend who has a transgender child.

Our Dear friend Janie has just shown me a drastic error I have made on this forum.

I WISH TO PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE TO MARY ANN !!!

And let it be understood that I completely mis-read the last sentence of her oringianl post.

(I thought it said something completely opposite.)

And that I am in agreement with her entire post - not just her first part.

And that I am sorry to any of the rest of you who were offended by my respone.

You had every right to be.

It was my error and my fault.

And to Joe for any misuderstanding that may have caused you.

You have never been anything but a kind, friendly, classmate to me.

And I also look forward to reading your book.

Thanks Janie        (I have deletd some previous junk that was just taking up space)

I am happy I was able to figure it out. Huge misunderstanding. Hopefully we can move on. Thanks for the apology Dave.  Let's measure twice and cut once as they say before jumping to conclusions. I think it's always best to give the benefit of the doubt especially when it comes to friends of such long standing.

Meanwhile, back in the PNW, how's that leg coming along, Tim?

Leg, who cares about Tim'sleg. I want to know if he has a flight to Nome, Alaska so that he and his family can avoid the HEAT.  I know that Portland, OR iss toying with a record high of 106 degrees today.  Tim, buy an air conditioner quick; stock up on the ice and lemonade beefore it's all sold out.  I would have added Jim Beam, but figure you already laid in a good supply when that other thing happend to yourleg.

Joe, looking forward to the August 26th get together. Who do you want to be there? Make some calls or send some messages. Get them onboard. Often times our group needs a little urging. wink

Mary Margaret Clark (Schultheis)

Hi All.  I wanted to let everyone on the message forum know that Toni Cardi was readmitted to the hospital this past Sunday.  After an MRI on Monday, it was determined that she had suffered either a series of small mini-strokes or something a bit more serious.  She has been moved to the new neuroscience wing of Riverside Methodist Hospital and is in room 2010.  The direct phone number to her room is 614-544-7774.  When I spoke to her yesterday, she said that she was scheduled to undergo more testing today in order to determine exactly which type of stroke and which medications would be best to prevent a recurrence.  She gave me permission to provide this information to everyone and  that she would be most appreciative for prayers to be said for the state of her health going forward.  Apparently, both of her parents passed away from the effects of high blood pressue and so she is, understandably, quite worried.   MM

My daughter Jennie Brown Thompson is an OT in the neuroscience building.  Asked her to look for her today.  HIPA  of course, but she may be working with her.

Thanks for the news about Toni, MM. Sure wish it was better.  Hopefully, the doctors will put it right for her. I know she will get a kick out of some get well cards and phone calls from the class. Kathy W.

Will be praying for Toni and thinking of her.  Thanks for the update.  Joe

Mary Margaret Clark (Schultheis)

Update on Toni:  I spoke to Toni this morning and she told me that they moved her from the neuroscience wing back over to the main hospital building.  She said that the test results revealed that her stroke was not a TIA, but a stroke caused more by uncontrolled hypertension.  As I am obviously not in the medical field my information may be a little sketchy.  In any event, Toni was told that she will most likely be moved to a skilled nursing facility (they are hoping to get her into the Ohio Health Rehabilitation Hospital) to continue treating her medical issues.  The doctors have her on blood thinners and will be adjusting her meds for the future.. She sounded stronger and was very upbeat today on the phone so I am sure if anyone would like to send good thoughts her way she would love to hear from you.  Again, her phone # is  614-544-7774  and her current room # is 2010.

Thanks, MM! Toni is such a sweet person and very alone. Her dear friends have made all the difference.

On a lighter note Fred organized a dinner for our same group that went to the Mexican Fiesta at OLV back in May. We sat out on the patio at a Mexican restaurant in Galloway called Tres Potrillos (3 colts I looked it up Fred).

Pictures are Fred, Don Brown, Charlotte McNamara, Brian McNamara, Monica Haban Brown and Clare Hummer Bauer. In other picture is Janie when Monica took the pic.

A good time was had by all! Ole!
