Looks like we will get a backhand slap from the hurricane and maybe isolated power outages but I do not think there will be serious damage to central fla. will check in about it as things progress.

Joe thanks for asking, but I'm wrapping up a visit to LA with my kids. Flew in on the tail end of Hillary. Missed all the fun. Don't leave til Thursday. But reports were lost power for five minutes, cable went out, and the cat stayed out all night. Reports were, the sentinals, our 100 year old Maple trees, are still standing, with usual branch thinning. Sounded like a lot of wind and rain then nothing. Anyway the cat made her way back.

On another subject, the movies. Had an opportunity to see RRR in a theater. My life has changed. I was lifted from the mundane and hurled into controlled chaos called delight.

Joe,

Talk about a full dance card. Wow!

Wish I could have been there for Fred's lunch group (I could have stayed if I had known) and your meeting with Al and Dick. Haven't seen Dick since before Bill passed away.

As usual for these parts, Idalia has already blown past us without much damage. The backside winds are leaving a lot of yard work for tomorrow.

Dead Palametto fronds blown off the trees is most of what we get. An odd big limb here and there and we often get a big old branch down on a local power line. Loss of power is always a threat to the frozen food.

The road in front of my cottage.

My next door neighbor dragged all their Kayaks up from the dock. Wouldn't want to see one of those flying through the air !

OMGolly!

Aren't we missing something?

Or more to the point - Haven't we been missing something - for a while now?

Where are "Leonardo" de Foster's pen and ink drawings?

Is moving to California his excuse?

(Mr. McCarthy, can you give us a clue? - or better yet, give him a kick in the rear)

I am very sorry Dave, but cannot due for multiple reasons.

1.  Although Mr. Larry moved to California to seemingly avoid our annual luncheon,he's a nice guy.

2.  Larry lives South of San Francisco, there is NO way I am going to drive through San Francisco to scuff up my shoes.

3.  Did I mention he's a great guy.

4.  He has friends that can take your eye out without breking a sweat, and leavein your bed with the horse's head.

5.  I might break the pencils he draws with that he keeps in his back pocket.

6.  Did I mention Larry is a greeat guy.

7.  Icould continue you Larry's first check just bounced.

I always thought if they had any imagination and/or sense of humor they would have used the horse's ass instead of its head.

Joe -- You messed up a pretty good closing joke, I think.

After puzzling over your line 7 for a while, I am guessing that "you" may have been a typo for "but." Am I right? So your defense of why you are not traveling down to Larry's to kick his butt (and I don't believe for a minute that the driving would bother you) was because, as you may have meant to say,  "I could continue, but Larry's first check just bounced." Hah! Very funny!

Dave M.,

Good pics of the damage - looks like you escaped any major destruction.

Obviously a lot of hurricane problems come from water and flooding by way of rain and storm surges. It probably didn't happen to your area as this storm was hitting you from the west, but does the May river ever get surges when hurricanes come from the east,?.

Glad you are safe.

Jim

Kinda feel a bit guilty dodging the bullet, Dave. Lucky for you up above us, at least, that the strength of a hurricane is sapped quite a bit when it has to travel distances over land, not water.

Lawrence Foster

Greetings Friends,

As you all may have noticed I have become more of a lurker here than a regular poster.  My move to California has been good but it is still quite an adjustment, especailly in terms of creating social connections.  Health-wise Peggy and I are doing fine but as we all know age tends to wear down parts of the body and so we each are making adjusments to that.

Back in December 2011 I began a blog page / web page (not sure what the correct term is) where I put up art work and make comments or add other quotes or stories that relate to the image.

It is:  https://landoflarry.com/   (FYI, sometimes the page that opens is not the most recent posting.  You can click on the title "Land of Larry" or on the word Archive to reformat the page.)

I have been posting only one item per month, on the first of the month, but that may change.  I do have a backlog of pieces and since I am a bit more settled I may be able to be more consistent in my work.  I may start posting twice a month.

I have still been doing art work but it has had some changes.  I have not done any acrylic painting because I had to downsize those materials due to size and storage space.  I don't have any easels, small or big.  It has been more convenient to just use pencils.  I have also been learning more about working with colored pencils.  I trying to improve my water color skills.  But water color is hard for me.  I like the structure and control of acrylic - think of the Bob Ross Joy of Painting show and how he constructs his images.  Anyway ...

Dave - " Lorenzo de Foster "?   Thank you very much for the compliment - and can I have the recipe for whatever it was that you were "tipping and sipping" when you came up with this?  Please?

Here are a few images that I put up on my web page from this year.  Some of these may have already been seen becasue I posted them on my Facebook page.  The 4 pencil sketches are from images I found on the iternet and made copies for myself.  Excuse the following pun -  I was just drawn to them.  Hope you enjoy, and thank you.

Larry, Glad to hear you're back.

I was "Livin on Sponge Cake", but no more of that as of today.

Really impressive work, Larry.

I marvel at the technique and more at the patience and focus that kind of work represents.

It's hard enough for me to sit still long enough to write a decent sentence. What secret little room you artistic types go to in order to get it together I'll never know.

Larry, your work is as wonderful as ever! You haven't lost your touch living in California!

Larry, thanks for the artwork update. My favorite here is the wood burned butterfly. Really nice.

From your post, it appears you have been able to maintain your creative output pretty well. I, on the other hand, find that with increasing age comes a decreasing level of creativity. My song writing and long-form efforts like screenplays, memoirs, plays, and novels that I have dabbled with in the past are just not happening any longer. If you, or anyone else out there want to offer some advice about restarting the old creative synapses. I would love to hear it.

I know Kevin Ryan does not read the Forum but I will share a story about him anyway.

I think Kevin's family moved into the house on West Cooke Road in about second or third grade. Up to that point in time I considered myself the second best "athlete" (fast runner - hard thrower) in our class. I was second only to my best friend Tommy Litzinger, and I was okay with that since he was such a good buddy.

But this new kid came into our class who sort of rocked our world because he was even more athletic than Tom. He was amazingly fast, and super strong. His speed was so much more than anybody could keep up with that he was always the last guy we could catch in the daily recess routine of "fence tag". He was even faster than the guys in the class ahead of us. Keith Groff and Tommy Swain and Charley Kaps (all fast runners) were simply in awe of his speed. And it caused me some degree of "let down". I had been "demoted".

Then one day, the nun (forgot her name) instructed me to sit in the back of the room with Kevin and help him with his arithmetic. We hunched together in two desks in the back corner and started with the math, but soon broke into more personal conversation, and began a bit of giigling.

From that moment I had a new friend - and he was cool. That became one of my best frienships for many years. And I was happy to be "third". And loved watching him run wild on the gridiron.

I can still see him swinging his free arm in a big circular motion when he changed directions.

------------------------

After Mike Boulware made me aware of the Hall of Fame a few years ago, I wrote a letter to the school expressing my shock that Kevin was not among the "Hall of Famers" from the school. I got a peply that there was a form to fill out for this nomination. I got it part way filled out and lost the paperwork in my messy desk. I also mentioned a bunch of other guys including best buddy Tom McKeon. I actually forgot that I had never sent it until Boulware made it known that Kevin had been inducted.

Best laid plans.....

James Hamilton, M. D.

Larry,

I concur with what others have said in support of your artwork. I might add that one thing that really impresses me is your attention to details in your sketches and wood burning. Some viewers of art like more abstract drawings and paintings but I am more into a realistic approach of scenic work and, as pointed out above, that is time consuming and involves attention to detail which really brings the audience into the scene.

Keep up the good work!

Jim

Donna Kelley (Velazquez)

Larry, your art studio space may have been downsized but your artistic talent definitely has not been diminished!  You know I am a fan of your work. Keep drawing and keep sharing, please. The same for all the photographers and songwriters in our group.

There are a lot of creative people in our class although it would seem that only the guys share with us.  Chicas?

Changing topics:  some of you friends have written me privately over the past months asking about our Ukrainian friends, the Antoniuk family.  Here we are on Friday after our "End of Summer Pizza Lunch" before they return to school. They are a special family who takes joy where they can find it after having to leave their lives and family behind.  We received wonderful news this week that little Andrii (next to me) no longer has to take any medications (only medical controls) for his leukemia treatment that has lasted 2 1/2 years. We are so grateful. It makes them happy to know that they have friends in the US who wish them well.

John Jackson

Donna, it’s really good to hear that things are looking up for your Ukrainian friends. I’m sure your help and friendship has made a real difference in their lives.

And, Larry, as someone whose artistic endeavors never progressed beyond the stick figure phase, let me say that I am in awe of your work – keep it up!

I should point out that while my drawing skills were (and are still) atrocious, I was really into art criticism for a while:
