Hi everybody!
Well, its that time again, to dust off that seat cousion and head on down to the local ballpark, buy a hotdog and a beer and enjoy nine innings of pure delight. I watched my beloved Detroit Tigers pull victory out of what looked like a certain loss to start their season off right! The thing I like about the game is there are no politicians trying to get your money and vote. The only arguments are about rules and who is the best hitter or pitcher or if that last play at first needs to be looked at in New York by a panal of expert umpires. Like the Bambino said, "Baseball, the greatest game....." Everybody, have a great Spring and Summer enjoying the National Pastime.

Jack, if you live up north like we do, you will have to wear a winter parka, hat, gloves & blanket!!  Go Yankees!

I must be confused, but I fail to understand why I cannot be opposed to both sides in our current political climate. On one hand, a criminal and completely amoral liar, doing his best to dismantle our constitution purely for his own personal gain, and on the other hand, a slow-witted, weak liberal.

Why did JoBi wait so long to level sanctions on Putin? Those Russian tanks sat on the border for many months and we did nothing but talk until they finaly crossed the border. Then we went after his Oligark buddies, but only some of them - why in God's name not all of them? Then some, but again, not all of their banks. Why are we pussy-footing around this madman and his tactically incompetent army? Why all this political nonsense about not using those older MIGs in Poland? As we watch them regather themselves on the Eastern border, do we not realize what is comming?

Yes, the arguement is so we won't provoke Nuclear warfare, but MY OPINION is that we have much more capability to offer Ukraine without provoking that. They need to be ready to take the next Russian attack out convincingly, and we all need to be ready for Russian to add another front, like Moldova, or Latvia.

As disappointed I as I am at last week's Jackson/Supreme court circus (in which my Republican Senators stooped to new lows and made complete jackasses of themselves), I was pleasantly suprised to see the Senate pass a new "Lend - Lease" bill to allow more fluid transisiton of militay aid to Ukriane. It sems more of a gesture, considering that we've already sent a ton of aid, but one can hope this may help in the future.

Meanwhile, the recent electons in Hungary and Serbia are very troubling, but God help us if France's election goes the wrong way tomorrow. Macron may not be my favorite guy, and I would actually agree with some of Ms. Le Pin's ideas, but her love of Putin is a pretty scary thought.

(NOTE: if someone is more knowledgable about her, please enlighten me)

Frank: Gobbledeegook. Just feel obliged to be honest with you.

Classmates: Thanks to all for the sympathy. I lost a stepson to a drug overdose. There is a different constellation of drugs out there and as always drug addicts come in all shapes and sizes and they can be very, very stealthy about it. Never underestimate that. I was oblivious. Even if I'd known and tried to act the recidivism is astronomical. But still.

Mike,

So sorry to hear this!

(was it the one I met at your home a few years back?)

One other thing: I don't watch television, havn't had a tv for years,  but rather do a lot of reading and of course you can watch movies and docs online. I've had this future shock experience of being in homes where, of course, the tv screens are much bigger than they were when I had a tv, and I can't imagine how people can converse with each other in those rooms. Anyway much of the reading I do and sometimes share here is in publications that have a paywall. And I don't know how well the war is being covered on television. But I hope it's clear from whatever reports everyone is seeing or reading  that what is happening in Ukraine is not just  war but systematic genocide. They do not rival the Nazis in quantity but not for lack of trying. From bombing civilian targets to firing squads. Children, women, the aged, the works. I guess it's partly my compulsion as a journalist and the respect for the war correspondents over there -- a job I never, fortunately, had -- but it feels more like my anger and anguish as a human being that however you get your news, I want to be sure  everybody bears witness. That everybody knows. And that those of you who pray are praying.

Mike – I'm sorry I misinterpreted your use of the James Blunt song, but still... I am feeling terribly sorry for what you must be going through with the loss of your stepson.

ok so I am a chatterbox. Been wired lately. I just now realized that of late it is easier for me to print, as I did in my Immaculate Conception days, than to write in cursive.

This circle of life moment brought to you by the friendly folks here at the osteoarthritis foundation.

Mike,

Cursive? Ha!  😂

The last time I could do that was in 1970 BC (Before [laptop] Computers) when I entered med school. No osteoarthritis then, just about 9 hours a day of frantic note-taking during those first 18 months of never ending lectures. I contend that is why many generations of docs are known for their undecipherable handwriting. Even my printing became - and still is - deplorable. Thank heavens for all of those cryptic medical abbreviations.

And these millennials think they invented wierd abbreviations for texting on their smartphones 📱!

It figures that the only comment about baseball comes from a Yankees fan. At least they are legitimate contender. But how a simple homemaker in Ohio supports a team from the Big Apple is a mystery to me. Must be the power of Madison Ave. As usual. I've been gone so long what is the team from Columbus called? Are they still the Clippers? And who do they farm for? Since I have been invested they have farmed for St. Louis, Pittsburg, New York, Cleveland and Washington. I guess they are farming for the Guardians. Good luck to all of them, even the Yanks. Go Tigers!

Jack....I started rooting for the Yankees in 1958 when they played the Milwaukee Braves in the World Series and the nuns allowed us to listen to the games on the radio since the games were played in the afternoon. Mickey Mantle was my idol and my brother loved Eddie Matthews....neither one of us waivered in our allegiance to our '58 Word Series teams over all of these years. Crick on the other hand was a die hard Reds fan. Good luck to your Tigers.

Ukraine

Watching the videos yesterday of British PM Boris Johnson walking freely, and out in the open through downtown Kiev with Zelenskyy, and stopping randomly to talk with Ukrainian citizens was pretty amazing! What a boost that must have been for Ukraininas who could watch this on TV.

(Note: I'm no big Johnson fan, but you gotta hand it to him)

I would be very surprized if JoBi had the balls to try it.

Covid

I fully expect to hear a crescendo of criticism on my pro-vax position regarding Covid19. Just watched a program on this "Great Barrier Declaration", with an interview with Stanford Medical School's Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.  Anti-vaxers may open fire. I won't run and hide from this.

Though I still do not agree with portions of their argument, I must admit that the three main pysicians behind the document - including also Dr. Sunetra Gupta (Oxford Univ.) and Dr. Martin Kulldorf (Harvard Univ.) carry a great deal of credibiity.  Anyone wishing to read it,  (you can Google it by the title above) its fairly lenghtly but profound.

I concur (and have since the outset) that keeping the younger kids home from school has had a devastating effect on mental health, however, I am not on board with this idea of letting things progress to "heard immunity".

Comments are welcome - take your best shot.

Jack,

I am guessing you would enjoy a ball game at Huntngton Park, home of the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland farm club), built in 2009, at a cost of about $42 million. It sits very close to downtown in the so called "Arena District" - site of the new NHL Hockey Arena and former site of the old State Penitentiary.

I myself have never been there, but keep hoping for an opportunity to enjoy it on some future visit. It seats about 10,000 and sounds as if it has more than adequate facilities for refreshment and libation.

As you alluded in an erlier post, there is something about attending a baseball game that is different from football and basketball. The pace of the game and the type of seating allows for a much more leisurley spectator experience. You get to sit and chat while partaking of four of God's greatest gifts to mankind - the great outdoors on a cool summer evening, hot dogs, mustard, and a cold beer.

It doesn't get much better than that!

(Note: looking southeasterly - downtown is at about 11:00 o'clock)

Dave, as you know The Great Barrington Declaration was written in 2020. Soon after its pubication the doctors and scientists who signed the document were demonized, dismissed, scorned and rebuked.  I am personally up-to-date on my necessary innoculations, but I reserve the right to take or not take a flu shot or an experimental Covid "vaccine" so I am NOT "anti-vax", a term that was coined to further demonize and ostracize anyone who deviated from the State's forced mandates. A critical look back is necessary to understand the severe consequences of complying with government ordered mandates.  This Twitter thread was shared with me yesterday. Read the entire thread to understand the impact of  government ordered mandates  Note:  the original tweet states that this video was after 7 days of lockdown on Shanghai.when the fact is that the lockdowns had been in place for over two weeks and were to be lifted April 8th.  The CCP then extended the lockdown for another week.  The people are running short of food & other necessities.  https://twitter.com/patrickmadrid/status/1512600420610363394?s=20&t=ax90Sv2NLVAuJKgB9LcJ0A

Dave: I'm not sure if you invented it or it was a misprint, but I love the idea of "heard immunity."

You could use it to describe people who won't listen to reason.

Mike, Dave and all of you who live near the ocean,

Dolphin pods are fun to watch and their acrobatic, coordinated jumps allow them to inhale and exhale. Unfortunately, their synchronized swimming and close behavior has been spreading a virus, cetacean morbilivirus, a respiratory pathogen in the measles family, which is killing thousands of these social, playful creatures.

"Social distancing" is not an option as these pods are usually close knit and a part of their innate behavior. And how do you mask a blowhole? Let's hope they can develop herd immunity before they become another endangered species.
