Clare's newspaper clipping about turtle sales brings back memories.
First of all we always joked that Robert Armstrong had an unfair advantage. (he used to win these contests in grade school too). His dad was a cop so we assumed he could always put a little extra pressure on anyone who said no - LOL.
Truth be known, my mother would not allow me to sell them door to door, or to strangers. She used to say that Kroger couldn't sell that brand of candy even on their clearance shelf and she didn't want me pedlling "that junk" to friends and neighbors. So she gave me the ten dollars and I ate most of them myself.
And years later, my "mid-kid" Sara, (later of Watterson class about "90?) while still in grade school at "Most Precious Blood" Catholic grade shool in Denver, won a similar sales contest and the first prize was two tickets to a Bruce Springstein concert at Mile High Stadium on a Sunday night in the spring (about 1987). Her young uncle, Brian Hughes (grew up on Arlington Ave.) was living in nearby Fort Collins CO and offered to take her. But snow cancelled the concert until the next night and Brian could not take her on that Monday night. Guess who the task fell to? Yup, good old Dad. It poured rain but our seats were under cover. I dreaded going but I had no "escape". We actually had a blast. We never sat down the entire show, and could not hear for three or four days after. BORN IN THE USA !
