Dave -- By the way, I hope during your rendez-vous with fellow alums you made a pitch to them to participate in our forum. I for one am getting sick of reading lame posts by some a-hole who wants to talk about drawing rooms, butlers, and the Tropic of Capricorn for heaven's sake. From the recounting you offered of your meeting up with them, they sound as if they are a verbose, opinionated, funny bunch. Surely, they could be cajoled into posting a thought now and again. I hope you did a little arm twisting on our behalf. And Keith Groff...come on, that guy has an opinion about everything as I recall, and well-thought out opinions at that. Am I remembering him correctly?

Mark,

Whoever that guy is talking about drawing rooms and various "Tropics" and the like,,,, I agree with you. And it's a pretty sad day when I have to resort to a photogrpah of a White Castle on the far side of the moon, er, I mean the far side of High Street to get any attention.

But what I have learned on two recent road trips is that there are more readers than we are aware of.

I have tried to get Keith inteterested for two years but can't seem to crack his code. He just has other interests since he retired from his job as the founding Dean of the new School of Arts and Sciences at Franklin - just one of about three pages of teaching jobs around the world on his C.V. Serious road bicycling with David Dunn seems to be his all-consuming passion lately - like 30 miles a day! (that, and letting me watch as he tries to apply putty on a replacement glass pane for his garage window - which in my humble opinion, was not his "calling" in life).

Same with Kevin Ryan, Tom McKeon, and Father Mike de Temple. I've tried.

But I got a quite unexpected nice comment from Ray Browning, who it seems, is a regualr reader.

Go figure.

p.s. I was forgetting Brian McNamara and first-timer Steve Hemmelgarn at the lunch.

Dave -- Wow, Steve Hemmelgarn, now there's someone I haven't heard mentioned. I seem to recall he was majoring in journalism at OSU and wanted to be a sports writer. Is that the directon he took? I also recall him working for the football team in some capacity, and one day he told me the story of Woody going berserk in the locker room where he gotso angry with a player that he snatched his own glasses off his face and crushed and tore them into little pieces. Who knew Woody had a temper, or difficulty restraining his outbursts? I wonder if that would have gotten him into trouble some day.

To speak about the future one must look to the past.

I just returned from a quick drive to Portland, OR.  While there I stopped and had a short talk with an old acquaintance Norman.  He told me about one of his sons latest acting assignments.  He plays the person in charge of the Western half of the "united states".  The show, about to start it's second season, is "The Man in the High Tower".  It concerns the events AFTER the Second World War when the winners,  Germany and Japan, split the U.S.A. into two parts with Germany controlling the Eastern half and Japan controlling the Western Half.  I think it is "sponsored or produced" by Amazon.

Now that we have the "FACTS" straight we can proceed with responding to Jim's question about that reunion.

Hey,

Just saw the weather report. It is chilly here in the beautiful PNW but I am very jealous of Ohio, and Columbus, in particular! I mean how many times in your life can you go out on High Street, look north, and actually watch a glacier advancing! Jim, you'll want a picture of that, huh!?

Joe,

Did Germany and Japan also divide Russia?

Tim,

Great to hear that glaciers are advancing again. I thought that climate change had destroyed all of them. 🌨 ❄

Mark,

I arrived late at the lunch and hardly got a word with Steve, nor Fred or Brian. I have no idea what Steve is doing.

I could tell you the secret location, but then I'd have to kill you.

(L to R - Steve, Brian, Charlie, me, Ray, Mike del Bianco's look-alike younger nephew, Bill, Kevin, Fred)

CORRECTION:  that's not Steve Hemmelgarn (front left) , it was Dave Roush

 - - Sorry Dave, my bad!

Looking good, guys.

Mike, I think the last time I saw you was at Carole's office.

Apologies to Mark, Dave, and all - see my correction above the photo.

Dave,

Thanks for that correction regarding Steve Hemmelgarn. He was my best man at our wedding and I feared he must have had a face transplant since the last time I had seen him!

Jim – regarding your former best man, Steve, I learned from Fred Clem that Steve did indeed become a sports journalist, and is currently writing for the Parkersburg WV News and Sentinel. As I asked Fred, do you have any idea if Steve is aware of our Chatty-Kathy morning wake-up coffee klatch, otherwise known as this WHS Message Forum?

Mark,

Yes, Steve has been doing that for >40 years now; works on one side of the Ohio River and lives on the other side if I remember correctly. A bunch of us used to have some great basketball games at the Hemmelgarn home in Colonial Hills back in those high school days.

NEW TOPIC:

I have been reading some reports today about the Southern Flannel Moth (Megalopyge opercularis) which seems to be increasing it's presence in Florida. The larval form, the puss caterpillar (AKA tree asp and others), is a wooly slug-like critter that can inflict toxic stings which can be quite painful.

Have any of you Floridians seen these in your yards or on your trees? If so, please snap a photo and post it on this Forum. But don't touch or pet the furry things.

This is another bioscience lesson....

Thanks for the tip Jim. I have gathered several of them and brought them into the house to cuddle with.

By now you will have all heard about last night's winning lottery ticket. It sold here in South Cackalatchie for $1.5 Billion.  This is a state where we are allowed to keep our identity private upon winning the lottery. I'm sorry to disappoint you but my attorney has advised me not to say whether or not I had the winning ticket.

On second thought, I would be happy to disclose privately to any individual who will mail me a postal money order for $100.00, but you will be required to sign an agreement that you will not leak the information to anyyone else.

(or just anyone else, as Mark might be so quick to explain)

I wouldn't wait too long. After I receive the first ten money orders, the price will go up to $1,000.00

Linda,

Too easy.....Flippo, "The King of the Clowns"

He attended the same synagougue with brothers Ruben & John Comeras who owned Easton Shoes (Graceland and Kingsdale Shopping Centers).  Bob made several personal appearances at the stores over the years, in costume of course.

Image result for flippo the clown

My memory is weak, but didn't we go into several posts about Flippo a year or so ago. Seems to me Fred, you had a story about his charity work in Columbus and didn't you post a documemtary they made on his life?

Did a google on "Marvin Fishman" and read the Dispatch obit. Recommend it for old times' sake...incredibly cool guy and another example of how lucky we were to grow up when/where we did.  I wonder if Ziggy Coyle owned Coyle's Music?

Thanks Linda/Fred.

Read Steve Hodges latest writing and I think the " Sentence about the Oscar Winners" is really cute! I bet the kids get a kick out of it! Kathy Wintering Nagy

Kathy,

Where might we find Steve Hodges "writings"?

Dave, Steve updated his profile. You can see it on the website. Thanks for doing this Steve!

I wonder if Steve's "Movie Sentence" is as long as my earlier diatribe on some of my favorties - lol?
