If you need to see a 3 1/2 hour long, extremely slow, tedious (but VERY GOOD) movie, go see Killers of the Flower Moon.  A fascinating account of a true bit of shameful history about the Osage Indians of Oklahoma and the struggles over their oil wealth in the early 1900's.

But be prepared for a rather bizarre way of ending the film.

Also, I could not help but see a remarkable resemblance to current day affairs in our nation's capital.  I could almost say that the part of Donald J Trump was played by Robert DeNirro, and Leonardo Dicaprio played Matt Gaetz, or Kevin McCathy (or one of that crowd) - the story is rife with fear, cowardice, and lying!

And did I say long, slow and tedious?

It's a bobcat.

Bobcats have no tufted ears and longer tails than do lynx. They also have more distinctive spotted coloring.

Jim,

I cheated. We have Bobcats in the local area.

In my defense - Dave had already chosen Bobcats, so that left me with no choice.

Drive up to Portland was long but generally not bad.  About six hours into the drive I started getting some rain (actualy sprinkles) that didn't last long.  That was the beginning of the remander of the trip.   Around Medford, OR it started heavy, for 40 seconds, then nothing till Grants Pass where the "Sprinkels" started an on and off for the next hour.  Then Sunshine wih occassional clouds. At Salem it started ssprinkling for twenty seconds then back to mostly sunshine.  Made it to Portland in only 11 hours, which included three stops for fuel and one to a McDonalds for a to go order.

Dave: lotta talk about that film. A really interesting choice to leave things up in the air, to challenge the the audience to think things through in a different way -- and by "things" I mean how we tell our stories realistically, willing to be unsettled and unsure about it and work our way through minus the usual pat on the head we generally get at the end of the movie and on our way out the lobby.

Meanwhile in the Middle East - you've all seen the news.

It seems the concept of "proportionality" has been lost - tossed out somewhere in the scrap pile of ideologies. As of two days ago, 3,700 Palestinian CHILDREN have been killed!  And how many Hamas leaders? Maybe two or three.

Hospitals are out of water, electricity, medicine, and even space. Bakeries are out of bread. Gazans are told to leave but cannot go anywhere. The utter stupidiity of both sides is simply mind-boggling!

What did Hamas terrorist morons really think they would gain?

And who or what does self-righteous "Bibi" (currently under investigation for corruption by his own government) really think he will defeat?     Probably not world opinion.

My prediction - this will solve absolutey nothing.

Jim, I’m surprised that an old wildlife hand like yourself (who else in the Class of ‘66  follows the rutting season as intently as you?) was fooled by a store-bought Halloween costume.  Didn’t the date of the critter cam sighting (Oct.31) tip you off?

I’m also surprised that Dave and Joe, normally paragons of sober judgment, were fooled.

John,

Hmmm, that explains why the kid chose from my bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups instead of the bag of mice 😄!

For those in Ohio, the Bishops in the state have been speaking out against passage of Issue 1. I am sharing our Bishop's message because the issue is not political, it is not liberal or conservative, it is not Democrat or Republican....it is a moral issue & one that deserves mention here because other states will be watching how Ohioans vote.

MM et al,

Don't make the mistake that Colorado made years ago by legalizing marijuana. That slippery slope will lead to other things but will also end up getting the drug into the hands of minors and create more business for emergency rooms.

MM, I believe you are referring to issue 1 which concerns abortion.  Issue 2 concerns legalizing marijuana.

Opponents of Issue 1 have put out a lot of misinformation about what it does and doesn’t do.  According to the headline of  the AP article below, “Misinformation about the proposal is rampant”. The article also takes issue with a number of claims Bishop Fernandes makes in his statement.

Thanks for pointing out the typo John....guess I will have to fire my proof-reader.

I am passing along this additional link so that you can better examine the exact contents of the proposed amendment. That we have to discuss fetal viabiltiy as a marker for a legal abortion is shameless in that every pre-born baby is a human being created by God in His image and likeness from the moment of conception. It is naive to believe that all medical professionals hold this belief system.

At the end of the day, we will all have to answer to God, including me, for the moral decisions we make during our life on earth.

I have put up a photo of a baby miscarried at 20 weeks on the User Forum. Please ask yourself  what would happen to this child under an abortionist's care?

MM, I have a lot of problems with positions, such as election denial and climate denial, held by people on “the right” (whatever that means) but I do understand why abortion is controversial and I respect your right to oppose it.  But I do take issue when misinformation presented by opponents, including bishops, is used to sway the debate.

To all the politically motivated and those deeply concerned with social issues that barely concern the majority of the public: The more you say, the more confusion your audience has to endure to derive the best path to pursue. When lies and bullpucky enter the fray, who become experts? The loud? The angry? The uninformed? Anyone can have an opinion.

Remember the story of Nimrod and the tower of Babel. His kingdom couldn't climb to heaven and gain the glories of God because too many foriegn contractors got involved with the constructon and the project went straight to hell due to the lack of proper communication. Yep, the bane of humanity. Although we have language, few people are truly capable of communicating. Mostly for me it's audibility that prevents me from understanding certain things. If I have to read something, it better not have a font size so small that I require a magnifier. So when people try to muster support for a pet issue it's best to do research that requires the courage to suspend your bias so that when you pour over views counter to your standards and preferences it's best to be as objective and open as conceivably possible. To our collective detriment, this is a rare occurance.

I've said this before many many times, 'never ever, ever believe anything you hear or see on television or in movies. I arrived at this when I studied filmmaking in Art school. I learned that anything anyone can think of, can be created in one form or another. It's a world of nothing but illusion. The visual is enhanced by dialogue, music and movement in the scene.

Sooooo. Enjoy.?!#%*

Jack:

I can't do it. I can't keep from pointing out a weird little word usage peculiarity - a mistake I've made myself and only avoid now because somewhere along the line an eagle eyed copy editor gave me a stern lecture about it way early in my career.

It's "pore" not pour when what you mean to say is that you were doing a lot of reading as part of whatever project or obsessive subject you are engaged in - as, for example, if I wrote "These days I find myself poring over the stories about those cheating bastards from the school woody hayes called "that team up north."

Just a weird kink in the language that few are aware of, the pored/pour thing. There are many such kinks but that is an especially sneaky one given that "poured" actually makes sense - brings up an image of really getting lost and involved with the reading - soaking it in, if you will.

Anyway as far as the grammar/spelling/word usage nazis of the sort I came up with in journalism, it's "I pored over my notes" not "I poured" over my notes, which, if you took that literally, would only make a mess.

Speaking of current issues and literary oddities last night Denise and her daughter and my son Taylor and I went to see Art Spiegleman, the brilliant creator of "Maus," the inventive graphic novel about his parents, who were holocaust survivors. Just so fascinating that a writer turned the panels/speech bubble genre - commonly known as a comic book - into a compelling literary triumph. It is quite seriously one of the most memorable literary achievements of our generation.

Spiegelman had us mesmerized for two hours, just sitting there on stage talking. He's been touring for years, doing these talks, accompanied by his graphic novelist buddy, Neal Gaiman. Two hours plus, actually, and we were spellbound the whole way through. The setting itself - I had to stop and appreciate it - was just so beautiful. Orlando has a fabulous new performing arts complex and our walk took us around a big lake downtown, really big - two blocks I'd say - with swans and illuminated fountains in the middle of a really progressive neighborhood downtown. This city has gotten so crowded in the couple of decades or so that I have been here and I miss the slower pace it used to have but there's a plus side to the changes and last night was a great illustration of that.

Sorry. Got a little windy. Just still charged up about the evening and lately I have been newly appreciative of the luck that brought me down here. I feel very, very fortunate, and I wish the same for all of you.

So there I was, just having returned from Portland, OR Sunday evening and finishing chores late Monday, when I saw multiple flashing lights and an insistent pounding on my front door at about 2:30 A.M. today (Tuesday).  All I could think of was what movie with Extra-Terristrials was Mark filming in my neighborhood.  But I quickkly put on pants and a shirt to see what was up.  When we opened the door a person, standing in a smoky haze, yelled for us to immediately vacate our house because the house next door wa engulfed in flames.  It was and there is only  about 8 - 10 feet between houses.  We took the fireman's advice and left our house to stand in 40 degree weather watching firemen (includes woman) from three large firetrucks fight the fire and police, with four cruisers, helped secure the area.

POTENTIAL cause was a mini refrigerator plugged in below a kitchen counter that ignited a tray of snacks on the counter.  At approximately 6:20 A.M. we learned the the neighbors house was Red Tagged amd will probably have to be demolished.

Before dinner we went to Home Depot to purchase additional smoke detectors.  They saved our neighbors.

Joe Mc C.,

Glad you are all safe!

We know the fear of being evacuated due to fire and the worry of if your home will be there when you return. You feel so helpless and fearfull of what you might find.

Joe, isn’t this your second close brush with fire?  I seem to recall your in-laws (or other relatives?) had to evacuate/lost their home in Paradise in the horrendous Califonia fire season of 2018.  Or was that Tim?

damn Joe helluva story. Happening just before the holidays will make it even tougher for them. Please let us know what the hell those flammable snacks were so we can avoid them. So sorry for your neighbors.

John, that was Tim; If I remembe right it was his In-Laws, but correct me if my memory is poor.

Mike, snacks that contain oils such as: chips, nuts and you get the idea.

Because the houses are so close we were worried, as were the firemen (that includesthe three women firefighters) didn't want to worry about looking for people inside burning structure.  Quickly I went back inside to grab coats, blankets and shoes for the neighbors who had runout with mostly the clothes they were wearing to bed.  Another neighbor also helped with some clothes.

The neighbors were renting the home; the actual owners are flying from near Atlanta where they relocated to buy and rehab an old home into a bed and breakfast.  The neighbors (all eight family members including two grand children) are temporarily staying at the nearby Indian Casino's hotel.

My wife had one profound statement.  She was glad it happened AFTER I returned from Porland because otherwise she would have been alone.
