Boy, what a walk down memories lane!  Most of my (limited) memories seem to be from around St. Michael's- Sr. Ellen Marie's three sided ruler she used to make her points, Fr. Byrne's constant badgering for money, and Fr. Fulcher's slapping around of altar boys!  I remember Sr. Karen Marie's drone-like lectures and throwing hand made darts that stuck to her lectern.  I also seem to remember a Sr. Michelle, whose sister visited her one weekend and ended taking her back home with her!?!  I wish ny memory was as clear as our unofficial class historians: Dave, Fred, Beth, Bob C.,  Dr. Jim's and others!  Really missed several classmates that weren't there: Donnie, Ray B., Lynda, Carolyn and Dennis, and others.  Great seeing everyone- nice to know we're still making memories!

Jim, somewhere we have my dad's high school year books I think. He also played on the baseball team. They had to be friends. And was in the Mikado. lol. Those are memories I have. A cool yearbook. I will try to find it. His name was Harry Lawrence "Had" Albright. He went by "Had" his entire life. He went to Holy Rosary and lived just off Bryden on Berkeley Rd.

I loaded the class graduation photo into photo gallery graduation album but it's blurry. I thought maybe you could try with the original,

Beth your basketball picture loaded fine  it's in the basketball album.

Alan: I do remember the hand-made darts. They were paper airplanes with very thin pins inserted into the nose, right? I distinctly remember being in class -- this happened not in grade school but at watterson -- sitting in a seat near the front of the room, minding my own business, most likely paying no attention whatsoever to the teacher, and being impaled by one of those darts. I think you may have been the one who threw it. Give me chance to bribe a few witnesses and my attorney will be in touch with you.

Seriously, my memory isn't sharp enough for me to say for certain who did it but I do clearly remember feeing a sudden sting, looking down at the web of my right hand between the forefinger and thumb, and noticing a paper airplane with a needle warhead sticking out of it. I turned around to see you - or whoever the perp was - doing his best to keep from laughing out loud.

Jim Hamilton reminds us of the 1964 presidential race between Barry Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson. How well I remember those days in Mr. Walker's class! I recall being part of the "Goldwater Corner" -- me, Jeff Eisenman, and John Roach. Many days we could raise a topic that would completely take over the class for that day -- and the rest of the class seemed to enjoy the diversion! Turned out that we didn't learn a lot about  American History in those days, but we did learn how to think through an issue -- as we were actually MAKING history! My son told me when he took American History in high school that we had it a lot easier than he did, since there was so much less history when we were in high school! Who knows about the history being made right now, and in the next couple of weeks ... I suspect that will be talked about in many future history classes!

Football quiz:

1) Which game did Ray Browning get knocked out in?? Extra points if you can remember when in the game it happened.

2) When did we play Arlington? Why? Extra points for final score.

If these have been asked/answered already, minus points for me being a dumbass.

Janie,

Sorry about the blurred class photo. It was published in the Dispatch 4 May 1966 and was stretched across the entire page, 14 inches wide. The newspaper clipping I have is old and yellowed. In order to scan it into my computer I had to shrink it on my copier first as my scanner only accepts up to letter-sized pictures. This was the best I could do.

Tim,

I do not recall the football team ever playing Arlington during our four years. There was a famous state championship game in November, 1966 and WHS won but that was after we graduated.

As for Ray's TBI, I don't recall that at all. The question is: does he???

Tim, Ray Browning was all heart and a great teammate. He knocked himself during our Lancaster game; they had a fullback that looked 35 years old and Ray really popped him a wonderful hit. Unfortunately, he hurt himself doing it. Lancaster had a junior QB named Rex Kearn and he was really good; even back then.

The class of 1967 beat UA 32-0 during the 1966 season.

Speaking of football, I found this picture in my old scrapbook of the 1959 Immaculate Conception team. That was before we had nicnames like "Eagles". BTW, does anyone know what IC's current nickname/mascot is? Most of these players ended up at Watterson either in our class or the classes of '64 or '65.

We used to practice and play our home games at Como Park Field. There were a few bleacher seats at the north end of Como Park where this photo was taken.

I recall that Fr. Crosser once came to one of our practices and "recruited" the team to come with him to some quarry (?maybe Marble Cliff??) to help load rocks into some trucks. Those rocks became part of the Grotto at IC.

Jim,

I believe IC's mascot is Rams.

Fred, thanks, I did not know that but I like that name. In fact, rams are one of my favorite wildlife subjects to photograph:

The males tend to gather together in the winter for naps as seen above. Now here are some rams grazing in the summer. Get out the magnifying glass - HOW MANY RAMS ARE IN THIS PICTURE? Hint: they are well hidden in their enviornment by their natural camouflage.

Just something to ponder while passing out candy on this Halloween evening...

Regarding The Thirsty I -- that den of iniquity that I loved so well, and where, one night I was introduced, by Bob McGivern,  to a little spitfire from Worthington HS ('67) named Jennie. And Boom! there went the next 11 years of my life. Quite the ride though, before Jennie rode off into the sunset, and said "Baby, don't look back." Hardly a sentiment we message board posters can relate to these days. We are all about looking back. And speaking of the Thirsty I's jukebox, I remember Jennie's favorite song was "Blue Rhondo a la Turk"--the flipside to Dave Brubeck's more poular "Take Five."

Oh and Dave Mitchell -- speaking of songs from back then -- the song that starts "There's something happening here," that you mentioned in your post is the opening line from the song, "For What It's Worth" by The Buffalo Springfield, not from Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Or did Kenny Rogers do a version of this as well?  Maybe you are remembering "Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In," which has a kind of a similar sound to it, not to mention a kick-ass title.

I'm with you, Beth. I actually liked those teachers, too, though I was a little scared of them. Remember that DNA helix thing on the biology final?  Nailed it--not!!  I think I had Mr. Dorrian for POD and I think you were in my class. I can remember a big mock political convention in class when Mike DeTemple and you were elected governor and lieutenant governor. Reading your description of our walks home from Watterson, I think Sue Endebrock & Mary Rabe & maybe Francene Maple were in the group and dropped off along the way. But I was struck by the fact that you being the farthest and lingering at Christine's, you must not have gotten home before 5 o'clock!!!  Thanks for backing me up about Mike Hill.  If only he had learned to go left!!!

Tim, did YOU know the answers to those football questions?  And with all the golf talk, was wondering if we had a golf team in '66 and who was on it if we did?

Speaking of the Thirsty I:

Sorry again everyone. I was trying to send the menu. A pizza was $1.25  and a sandwich was $.70. Jim, Tell me what I'm doing wrong with posting the pics. I upload different ones but then they all come out the same. 😬

Hummer....Mike Boulware...Jim H

Hummer, you got me...I thought fer shure we were seniors when we played Arlington but Ray Browning straightened me out as did Mike. I always thought the Arlington kids sorted acted uppity...probably all in my head but I loved seeing Mike and the guys wax 'em. But Mike...Ray himself told me he got the knock out blow playing Dayton.

Jim H. I counted 47 Rams. Someone else will have to count the ewes. yes

Mark - great catch on the song....Stephen Stills would be proud of you.  Debbie...your Mom was prettier than all the other Moms but many years later Favret's Mom played a trick on me that puts her up there with the best.

Tim, you are obviously seeing more than double, in fact much more 😵😵😵. Maybe you have had too many Thirsty "Eyes" 🍻. And, Tim, there will never be another
we>br>
Clare, the first pic you put on that post was, indeed, the menu (x3), but on your current post is their "coat of arms", again x3. I am not sure why but possibly if you import a photo then put your cursor a line or two below that photo then import another it would work better than trying to import all photos at the same time. That seems to work for me anyway.

Also, Clare, we did have a golf team. Dave Fredericks was on it.

Computers!!! Gotta love 'em and hate 'em!!

Wow, Janie,

You've created a monster! This is getting addictive. I think this is more fun than standing out in the cold parking lot at Ricardi's on a football night.

Tim,

I thought Ray got hurt in our game at that new Catholic school over in Dayton - the one we thought would be easy because they only had a freshman and sophmore class (or maybe juniors?). I seem to recall he did it on the openting kickoff. He ran down the field and smacked into the ball carrier so hard they both couldn't get up. One of the hardest hits I have  ever seen - still. Kevin Ryan once told me (years later) that some of their practices were harder than some of the real games. He said something to the effect of, "When we we're running full gear scrimmage and you break open into the clear and then get hit by Ray, or Frank (Strange) or Steve (Hodges), it's really hard to get up right away". And that from the best athlete I ever knew growing up. Forgive me if I cannot still name that fourth DB.

I think the game with Arlington (the year after we were gone) was not an official State Championship. As I recall it was an "exibition" put on at the request of Channel 4. They had each finished something like (UA) #1,  and us at #4 in the polls. They played it at Jet Stadium and televised it. Wasn't it Timmy Wagner that literally ran all over Arlington - like 230 yards?  Final score was 27-0 -- am I right on this?

Mike,

I also remember that game at Lancaster. Rex Kern was a magician at QB (even then), but you guys beat them something like 38-14. I also remember the time you guys manhandled Chillicothe. We had so many student buses going to those games the home crowd was bit shocked. Dennis Winchester and I sat in the back of one bus that night and shared a megaphone. We kept it going pretty loud all the way down and back. Coming out of the game a bunch of us were chanting "We are the Eagles, mighty mighty Eagles, everywhere we go, people want to know who we are,,,,,,,a group of parents came up to us and asked "who are you people anyway?" We were pretty flattered and proud. They had never heard of us before that night.

Mark

You are probably right on those songs. The groups had a similar sound (to me). But what a fun place!

* And "my condition is not in as great a' conditon" as it used to be.

Another fun "post-graduate" story.

Mary and I were raising three kids in Denver and we would fly home every couple of years to visit both families. Some of the vistis were at Christmas and some were during summer vacation. We were home one summer about, maybe 10 or 12 years after we were graduated and my parents neighborhood was throwing a "block party". They had police block of a part of Yaronia Drive where it breaks off onto Wynding Drive (which connected us to Glenmont). There were old and new neighbors from about three generations, and their new spouses, kids, and guests. My mom had hinted that the lady in the peach pants suit was curious to meet me (almost like Mom knew something that I didn't).

So I'm in the buffett line and this lady in the peach pants suit comes right up to me and looks into my face and says, "Hi Dave. Don't you remember me?" I had to stop and stare for a moment. She had great big eyes and quite thick glasses and she had on a name tag that read, "Jane Gordon". It took me a full second or two and then I blurted out "OMG! You're Sister Frederick!"  She laughed and said "Yup."

She had left the convent and married the Sheiser twins (OLP -Watterson 65) widowed father and was happy as a lark!  ( Life really is like a "box o' chocolates" )

Dave,

The 1966 State Championship was real.  The game was a regularly scheduled contest played at the original UA high school field, now called Jones Middle School.  Their current high school had opened but without a stadium at that site.

OHSAA did not have tournaments for football untill 1972.  The champions were previously declared by Associated Press and United Press International voting systems.  The game was televised live by channel 6, then known as WTVN-TV and now WSYX.

Hi Mary Clare.....yes, we had a golf team in 1966. Mike Wilcheck and I were on the team.  We won the CCL title that year.  Pat Mannion and Charlie Mental were two of the golf coaches we had during our stay at Watterson. Minerva Park was our home course.  It turns out most of the Watterson golfers during the 1960's were caddies at the Ohio State University golf course.  My dad was head wrestling coach at OSU, but worked in the pro shop during the summer and also was the caddy master.  I remember those early mornings going to the golf course six days a week.  Dad drove a car load of us caddies to the course. The group included classmates Don Holland, Steve Hemmelgarn, and Johnny Angel.  We all started caddying as 10 year olds!  As caddies we were rated as B, A, or AA.  The rates for 18 holes were $1.50 (B), $1.75 (A), and $2.00 (AA).  As you got older, you could carry double (two bags) for $3.50.  How times have changed!

The discussion on Italian golfers and courses rang a bell.  The assistant pro at the OSU golf course in the 60's was Rino Delaflora, a good Italian.  He later became the head pro at Riviera.

Cool Dave, Great heaing from you. I sort of remember Mr. DeLaflora's name. Wasn't Jack Graff the head pro at OSU? Or was he the OSU varsity golf coach?

Fred, thanks for the update - I could have sworn it was Jet Stadium

I just got a personal email back from Mike Detemple with a sweet follow up to my post about Sister Frederick's "after life". Mike I wish you would post that one for the whole group.

Jim,

I love your I.C. football photo, but it raises two questions:

First, where is Frank Strange? - not picuted or listed on the roster.

Second, that third kid from the right in the second row had the most winning smile. Wonder if he ever amounted to anything?

James Hamilton, M. D.

Dave Fredericks,

Glad you surfaced and chimed in on this forum! Your name has come up in these posts several times. If you have been following them you probably know that the 50th reunion was excellent thanks to Janie and her crew. The attendance was great but I missed you and Terri, Bob C., Chuck and Deb, John J., Fr. Robert (Steve) and Ma-Ha - all part of "the old gang". This forum is essentially an extension of the reunion.

Stay tuned and continue to add some of your historical memories about growing up in the 50's and 60's.

Dave Mitchell,

That IC team was when I was in the 6th grade. I don't think Frank joined the team until the 7th grade, but I don't know why. He certainly had the athletic skills and toughness well before that.

That kid with the smile never went too far in his football career. They tried to make him into a tackle as a freshman at BWHS but he was just too skinny to be a good blocker. I'm told he is cleaning up bear poop somewhere out west.

As  usual,Fred, you're 100 percent right on the circumstances and the stadium where the class of '67 did us older guys (?) proud by kicking UA's butts (32-0).  Also- Bully, Ray was knocked out on the opening kickoff against Kettering Alter.  I remember because I was about to hit the guy that Ray blasted, but he just kinda fell over before anyone else could touch him!  Knowing Ray, though, he probably did get knocked out in the Lancaster game also!   Also remember that in addition to good cold beer, Thirsty I had great hoagie sandwiches.  Mike- sorry if that dart was mine, but it sounded too fancy to be one of mine.  I just folded some paper on the back of a pin and that worked well enough to stick to the lectern when I hit it.
