It seems to me that in the Scottish "Links" vocabulary it must be,,,,, "FORE"!

Janie Albright (Blank)

As far as I know this is just a single forum. Tell your doctor friend to concentrate on the real problems like Obamacare vs Trumpcare.  Lol

Timothy Lavelle

Janie, thank you. I guess "fora" is the plural Latin word. Funny that that was used in business dealings around the forum where the oldest profession was on offer "fora dinar". Isn't language a hoot?

Jim H: Janie says get to work on Obama's Care versus Trumpy's "I Don't Care" please.

Tim and Janie,

Latin lives!

As for health care it is my opinion that civilian (as opposed to military) medicine is best practiced between doctors and patients without government (socialized medicine) interference.

I wonder if that topic was ever discussed by the ancient Roman physicians in one of their FORA, perhaps held in the Colloseum, on weekends when that facility was not being used for euthanizing Christians by government sponsored lions.🤔

Time for a little, very late, interruption.

An OLD song that my father taught me.

   Have you ever been to an Irishman's shanty;

      Were Water is Scarce, and Whisky is plenty;

   There''s a three legged stool and a table to match;

And a Hole in the floor for the chickens to scratch.

Tim,

I think you must just sit there in your cabin in the woods and dream these word games up. You really need to get out more. I bet the good Doctor Jim's advice would be some healthy excercise. Have you ever thought about yard work? Or are you too busy prying magnetic objects off of your knee joint?

By the way, we haven't had a serious heath update from you in a coon's age. Bet you're havin' a blast with those airport metal detectors?

Oh, and  "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres" to you too.

Donna Kelley (Velazquez)

Just a quick interjection from my neck of the woods to yours, Tim as to your interpretation of "fora dinar".  In Catalan "dinar fora" signifies to eat out which indicates the importance of knowing exactly what you are asking for. Yes, language is a hoot.

Sure wish I could think of a contribution of Irish lore.

After I flunked out of college, my Selective Service status was "four-A".  Does that count?

No, I guess that's not plural - although there were a lot of us.

Donna,

I had an Irish ancestor who wrote a pretty cool song - I believe it went, "Fora lora lora, fora lora li", but after he wrote it down the band couldn't read his writing, so it came out diffrently in the end - I guess.

Then he met some Italian guy who decided to make it into a movie and they re-named it "Fora Few Quid More". But some guy from Hollywood stole the idea and switched currencies on them.

Doncha just hate when that happens?

What I learned from Scott  Hahn, Professor of Theology and Scripture at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990, and is the founder and director of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology:

Christ's words on the cross, "It is finished" have nothing to do with redemption, saving humankind (correct politics sucks), dying, after all, He said them BEFORE dying.

They refer to the final segment of the Passover meal (the FOURTH cup) which was omitted from the Last Supper. It "fulfills" the Old Covenant Passover transforming it into New Covenant Passover.

The following is a link with some details by Scott (excellent reading) for those inclined.  A book has been written by Scott Hahn thoroughly explaining it all: The Fourth Cup

By the way, Prof Hahn is an former very, very  anti-Catholic protestant minister. His story can be learned in his book, Rome Sweet Rome, or hear his conversion sorry FREE here:

Forum, Fora. Moonlit night. From my Scottish heritage. Back in Scotland the Maxwell clan owned land in the lowlands near the southern border near north England. The Brits would send parties of sheep rustlers accross the border into the land occupied by the Maxwell clan to collect all stray ewes and spirit them back to England. Sheep rustling was a big problem back then. Groups of clansmen would gather at night and hide in the lea and wait fora sign of the rustlers. When they were detected the clansmen would hunt forum. They were easy to find on a moonlict nict as their silhouettes were easy to spot on the horizon. When captured in the act, the rustlers were punished by being forced to sup with the Clan Maxwell. Hagus was served and single malt scotch. Robert Burns' poetry was recited and songs were sung.
Ultimately the Scots won their independance from England. Drunk History. Ahh.

Donna, I'm not touching that!

Jock, Do you think single malt was invented to remove the taste of haggis? Directions for use called for holding it in your mouth "fora while"....this may be the origin of that Braveheart "Slap my butt and call me Bruce" dance number, huh? Great history lesson dude.

James Hamilton, M. D.

It would seem that some of you are trying to do with variations of the word "forum" what the nuns used to have us do with new words in spelling classes: spell the word and then use it in a sentence. Here's mine:

Forus to be fora certain team requires being forum fora whole season and cheering forum even when they are losing.

Enough of this! (At least fora while.)

And thank God for our president! To add clarification of the golf term “fore”. It was adopted from the artillary men would shout “a fore” or simply better get out of the way. The term started afterMary Queen iof Scots discovered the game while in France,. While there in France the army supplied the “cadet” to take care of her needs while on the course. She being of Scotch decent butchered cadet pronounced in French “ ca day “, it then became caddy. Thank God for our President. Just a questionwhy did not one democrate bote for tax relief etc. there was nothing they liked in it, just wondering

Golly, just fora minute there I thought you guys were being serious I wonder how long we can keep this up?

Jack, and Jim, if you keep writing that clever stuff, you're gonna make it hard forum to keep up.

Linda,

Great piece of scriptural insight, but is there a (or "therea" - kinda like fora) "Cliff's Notes" version?   I do hope you realize I was being sort of facetious, or shall I say "reverse sarcastic" and I am aware that HE meant all of that, but the message of love overriding all other "Laws" is still my story and I'm stickin' with it. You remember in grade school when the Nuns explained the difference in "Perfect Contrition" vs. "Imperfect Contrition" to us. That's sorta where I was going with it. If it's compulsory, or under threat of punishment, it ain't the same as voluntary love and devotion.

Didn't know you went to Franciscan - great school !  Was Father Mike Scanlon there when you were there? Quite a guy - a bit of a spiritual giant. My Dad became acquainted with him, and years later I read "Let the Fire Fall". (wasn't that his book?)

* AND -  you still have not given us any of the story of your dad's band. You can't just leave us hanging here.

Oh golly gee, y’all R 2 funny.

Dave,

The short version of Scott Hahn’s Forth Cup can be found by clicking first link. You can even listen to it. No I did not go to Franciscan University, that is where Hahn is Professor (or are you pulling my leg?).

I found info about dad online in a book about Columbus,  musicians section. I hope to order it soon. It’s the 3rd in a series. (Can’t believe you remember about that).

I think, technically, that Steve Hemmelgarn does but does anyone else in our class live within the geographic boundaries of Appalachia which includes 420 counties in 13 states? It is scenic, green and quite beautiful.

In the '60's and '70's this was one of the poorest sections of the country, but has made many strides since then. Some of my roots actually go back to this region. Perhaps that is one reason that I chose to spend a month of my medical school training in Pomeroy, Ohio, a very small town on the Ohio River in Meigs County. I will admit some ulterior motives came from the fact I could not afford to go abroad like some of my classmates and that the "Appalachian Program" rotation paid $18 a day to any student who would choose to go there. I was the first to do so and chose March because it had 31 days. (Hey, I needed the money!)

My preceptor was Dr. Ray Pickens, an ex-navy test pilot who lived above his office, saw approximately 100 patients per day (essentially all walk-ins) and was one of only four doctors in the entire county. He described his practice as an "acute" one as he did not have the time to manage complex, chronic conditions. Today we would call that "urgent care".

He would occasionally admit a patient to Veterans' Memorial Hospital a mile or two down river in Middleport. It was a 17 bed facility - 16 while I was there since that was where I lived for the month.

Looking back on that experience it was the most interesting month I ever spent during my entire career. No, not that I learned the most about the science of medicine, or about drugs or diagnosis or procedures, but rather because of what knowledge I acquired about the people of this region and how medicine was practiced without even the "modern" (by 1972 standards) technologies that were available in "the big cities". It was medicine by the seat of your pants. And it was FUN!

Being the first to work with Doc Pickens, our picture and story appeared on the front page of the local newspaper, even above the banner. The other front page story below the banner was "Sheriff's Office Gets Second Phone".

In future posts I'll tell some of the stories from that month, some humerous, some pathetic, some a little scary but all will be HIPPA compliant. Besides, the statute of limitations has most likely expired.

Jim

Linda,

No, I was not pulling your leg. "Franciscan" in Steubenville realy is a great school - a deeply spiritual school - students and faculty alike. And It wasn't that long ago that you mentioned your dad's band - twice as I recall. I thought that called for a story.

Jim,

This is graet stuff! Can't wait to hear more.

And I am willing to bet there are many more good stories out there if those other than the handful of us writing would chip in.

Warning: what you are aboout to read will shock you. Sadden you. Change life as you know it.

I am calling for an investigation into the use of fake pictures on these Forum Postings. I believe a serious malfeasance has been taking place involving two of our (formerly) most honored Posters. I am asking that in the future they both be referred to as "Fake Poster A" and "Fake Poster B".

I am calling out Mike McLeod and Mark Schweickart as those two men who apparently find it acceptable to just simply lie to the rest of us. Please don't read any further unless you are cleared for adult language and subjects.

First, look at the picture Mr. McLeod (Defendant "Fake Poster A") uses with his posts. I have it on very good authority that the lady in this photo was an unsuspecting and beautiful woman McLeod met very briefly at a party in Las Vegas. Look closely at McLeod in the photo and you will see he is dangerously close to "one shot over the line" as he leers at us in the background. You can't see the selfie stick but it is clear that this is just one of many (MANY!) photos of various women, taken to show he could "Hook a good'n". I believe we may never know who this mystery woman is other than "Mike's Dream Gal".

As for Mr. Schweickart, isn't it blatantly obvious that on the day in question he stationed his son the photographer just a few feet away, ready to take a photo? Then he must have gone blundering through what appears to be a street party celebrating "Another Year Without Sliding Into the Sea" (big event in SoCal). Grabbing the best looking smiling woman before she could scream for help seems to have worked for him and thus we believe him to be partnered (as with "Fake Poster A", McLeod, as explained in detail above) with  a beauty that rates way out of his league. Credit is due for a well-timed photo shoot but the outcome is still a fraud, Mr. Schweickart!

You guys should be ashamed. Both these mysterous women live in infamy - their pictures show them as happy and in love...I don't know much about love so that may be a false assumption on my part. If they knew that America's most discerning audience (WHS '66) were so totally taken in by these fake pictures, I believe we would be reading and hearing about them in the news instead of Trump n Stormy, Trump n DACA, Trump n Border Wall, Trump n Troops, Trump n Budget, Trump n Cabinet, Trump n Trade War, Funny Hair Trump, Trump n Obama, Trump n Ganley, Trump n Miralago, Ted Nugent/Trump n Ganley, to name just a few of the topics on offer.

This public service announcement was supposed to appear on the back pages of the Forum to soothe the sensibilities of some in this time of insanity. Somehow it crept it's way to this "general usage, not to offend anyone NO MATTER WHAT!!" page. Please do not get me started on "$18 Hamilton" and his "I wanna be-a Kangaroo Mommy!" picture...

I take from the posting from the bard of mossey rock that just because he thinks that two of our more literate members of the class lack, in his vaulted position , that these gentleman lack ,how shall we delicately put it, that they lack the good looks of a screen star to attract such beauties into their lairs. What my learned friend of the liberal west coast gas overlooked their glibness and the turning of a phrase into an attractive  patter that would or could hoodwink these fine examples of feminine pulchritude. I think that with our colleague’s residence aptly named has himself become encasedin the very namesake of his town. Furthermore attacking with such veracity aimed at a doctor who at that time struggled to find a meal or meal money and has left the poor man with what appears to be a lifelong case of rickets. How else can anyone maintain the body of a teenager. Thank God he attended The OhioState University College  of Medicine where they were able to pull him through. Jealousy has an evil aim. I can’t say that our venerable has been infected but he has been effected by the evil eye of the sin. Though i have not seen Father Steve since high school i think i would not be surprised by an attack that his ordinal clothing is too bright and should be more subdues. We must pray for this man  who has been besieged by dampness, cloudyness, the 9th circuit court and maybe too much mercury in the seafood. To quote the Lord,”forgive him Father as he knows not what he says.

Definition of "All time low".

According to the Spring 2018 edition of the Catholic Digest & Dictionary: "All time low" is the cultural status attained by a human being (or most mammals) when W. T. 'Frank' Ganley feels the need to pray for that human or other mammal. I have reached all-time lowness.

There is a second definition. This definition places the emphasis on "ALL". It requires the person (or mammal) to join the Cabinet of Trumpy.

Tim and Frank,

That photo of me hopping around the creek with my camera does show me in an interesting position - "Kangaroo Mommy" or "Rickets"  - could be an apt description! I'll have you know that if I were to assume that posture today the next frame would show me face down in that creek awaiting my photography buddy to call 911 to rescue me. (By the way, the friend who took that picture was older then than any of us are today. He has since passed on to that great landscape above.) Ah, to be thin and flexible again!

Tim - It is true that my picture is less than up-to-date, as it was taken some 13 years ago when my wife and I visited New Orleans for Mardi Gras shortly after Katrina in 2005. As those of you who saw me at the reunion in 2016 will recall, I am a bit grayer and wrinklier than I was in this photo from 2005, but still, oh mossy one, I think it fair to say that this picture is a bit closer to reality than the ones on the forum using our highschool photo from 1966 as a representation. But then again, who ever claimed that there should be truth in advertising? Not me.

And yes, that is my sweetie I am dancing with, but if truth be told, she too has allowed nature to change the color of her hair to that salt and pepper look that reminds us who is in charge here--nature, not hair coloring, moisturizer, or us wishing it weren't so. I haven't taken to removing all the mirrors in my house yet, but I must admit I do avoid looking at them.
