Dave Mitchell and all Roy Orbison fans the reason for Roy's wearing sunglasses all day long and everywhere is somewhere in the late 50s early 60s. Roy was in a severe fire and the sunglasses help hide scars and aid his eyes in someway but the sunglasses are necessary. I hope this clears it up.

Hi Friends,

Sorry I could not make it to the reunion.  I had some family needs come up and that caused me to cancel my plans.  It sure looks like a good time was had by all of you who could attend.  

I talked with Joe McCarthy after he sent me this photo of him, Dick McNamara, and Al Judy.   They were able to meet at the Villa Nova Ristorante on High St. near the Columbus - Worthington border.  Joe is still on travel status somewhere in the midwest, probably Detroit area, so he asked me to post this for him.

I'm doing well out here in California.  The two grandsons started school today - 4th grade and 2nd grade.  I do a lot of driving to soccer, swimming and basketball practices and have good conversatons with the boys.  The Chicago family was out here in early June.  Granddaughter Vivi is with the School of Rock program and they were doing a musical tour in Cali and we got to see her perform on stage.  She will start 9th grade this fall and she is a Taylor Swift fan.  And rock and roll music nowadays is a whole world different than our times!

My best to all of you.  Keep going as best you can one day at a time.

Wait - one more thing:  Dan Schafner Cody  ( I hope you read this):  Do you have an ancestor named Esther Cody who might have been born around 1910 -15?  I have a photo of her and she is a distant cousin of mine.  So you and I may be cousins.  How's that for a scary thought?

Hello to all 3 of you guys if you read this Forum.

Fun memory:

I started kinderarten at Glennmont grade school with the two McNamara twins, Bill and Dick. One or other of the two would start the other one to crying so bad that the teacher had to call Mrs. McNamara to come pick them up early - almost every day. I still recall the image of Evelyn pulling sowly up to the school front door in that black Cadillac from the funeral home (about 1952 with little lumps for the tail lights) to pick the two of them up early and take them home.

Maybe everbody knows this. maybe not. but the other day I wondered just how useful google can be -- and  i decided to ask google how long I will likely be able to live.

As a journalist I had used google extensively to get info of all sorts, so I figured what the heck.

I entered in some biographical information and answered some of the follow up questions the algorithm asked me, such as  was I a smoker. Nope. I went back and forth with the algorithm as it posed a few other questions that were not unlike questions from a flesh and blood doctor. 

In the end My gal pal Miss Google advised me that statistically I can likely make it to my late 80s or even better.

Maybe everybody knows this trick but thought I'd mention it in case not.  The answer I got was pretty much what I expected, but still, kinda reassuring. Again, I knew Google was a valuable program for getting info, but had never thought of using it to ask a rather personal question - a question I'd ordinarily be a bit embarrssed to ask a fellow human being..

I apologize if you find this morbid - and you might just be of a mind to put yourself in the hands of God and not trouble yourself with his timetable. Oops I mean Her timetable.

While I was in Columbus for the reunion, I was staying with a younger cousin who shared a lot of a common interest - music.

Joe:  I appreciate the catch. As a journalist I was always charged with staying alert when it came to sexist pronouns. Clearly I've had some slippage in my retirement.

I made the obligatory change in the post below. And I'm not kidding about the pronoun usage, and how it was drilled into us as journalists to keep a balance that did not belittle females, however subtly. It puts a bit of a speed bump to put things like "in his or her opinion" into your copy, but given the stealthiness of sexism -- how it slips into a culture in small ways, such as pronoun  usage -- it's a small price to pay for a journalist to steer clear of turning in copy that smacks of being patronizing or dismissive, even to the slightest extent, of anyone based on their sex, race, nationality, or whatever. Anyway I'm embarrassed to have made the error particularly since I was trained to avoid it.

You may have seen my hometown Carmel Indiana on the news lately. A torrential downpour last week caused local rivers and streams to flood -- one river dozens of feet over its normal flow. The flood was the greatest in our area since 1913. Less than a mile from our house, a bridge over a local road was completely washed away on each end, and the center section is bound to fail soon.

In just 3 days an engineering miracle has happened. This afternoon, two National Guard helicopters lifted 73 1-ton sandbags into the still-flooding river to create a dam to stem the excessive water flow. Without it, flood waters would continue to flow into Indianapolis and cause major damage to homes and infrastructure there.

The plan to create the dam (actually, 2 of them; one as a backup in case the first one fails) all came together through cooperation between city, county, state, and national resources. It was a bit disturbing to see those Blackhawk helicopters flying over our house until we learned what they were doing. Dave Mitchell would be proud!

The cooperation of the residents in our area has been fantastic – everything from loading sandbags to providing food and water to hosting people in their homes whose house was flooded. Our church contributed $20,000 over the weekend to flood relief, and there’s more to come. Many other churches are doing likewise.

All this makes me so grateful for people who care about other people; to engineers who so quickly devised a plan to stem the flooding; and to the cooperation between various government agencies who devised and implemented a plan with very little delay.

Here’s a picture of the destroyed bridge; it’s less than a mile from our house and we used to travel over it often. Now we’ll need to find a different route! The area in the background that looks like a lake is actually a stone quarry. It used to be completely dry; now it holds over 2 BILLION gallons of water! Water that otherwise would have flowed south into Indianapolis and caused a tremendous amount of destruction.

Bottom line – people care for people, and they come to the rescue when disasters occur. Miracles still happen!

Hi Bill R - I was meaning to call you to see if you and Mary were okay, but I got busy with stuff and didn't get to it.  I hope your home is okay. Arlington got hit with some streets losing their trees and lots of branches. There was a tornado in south Columbus and some other weather issues that caused so much damage.  Sorry about the bridge and all the people that are affected. And the administration says Climate Warning is a hoax - not so!  joe

I have friends in nearby Noblesville. Did the flooding also hit them?

Yes, our entire county, which includes Noblesville, was affected by the floods. Those on lower ground or close to a river were particularly hard hit. Many people didn't have flood insurance, which is expensive, so they are now without everything they had. Pray for them, and for the people who are now caring for them.

Mark, the recovery was indeed astonishing and an engineering miracle. "One" doesn't come up with this complicated plan and execution; it took hundreds of people, working through nights and the weekend, and incredible cooperation from local, county, state, and federal resources to pull this off. Today looks so much better; the waters are receeding, but many roads are still closed and that bridge is still a goner.
