Say what you will but I've been pretty solid on this for some time now and I can't imagine there's anything out there to change my mind. Call me stubborn but I put mtg in first place in my scary threat list, while the ongoing threat that biodiversity will be erased by pollution and overpopulation and the planet will die out taking mankind along with it comes in at a distant second.

Refletions in the Afternoon

A quick visual break from politics:

While waiting for my wife to buy a few things at Walgreens, I was sitting in the car with the afternoon sun above some fantastic clouds, a single vapor trail (upper right) and a still partially snow-capped Pikes Peak (in lower far right window) to my back and reflected in the store's windows when I realized there was a photo-op in front of me.

Ain't cell phone cameras great at times like this!

A bit abstract view of "Springtime in the Rockies"!

Joseph D. McCarthy

One little thing about the Supreme Courts upcoming decision on Presidential Immunity.

IF, suppose, the Supremes decide that what Mr. Trump did regarding "looking" for more votes, and other actions falls under Presidential Immunity.

And IF Mr. Trump were to have a close election.  What is to keep President Biden from calling out the military to find the addional votes he might need to have the lead.  He could then claim Presidential Immunity for himself, and like Trump pardon all his cabinet members from any actions they took on his behalf  Maybe even give his son a pardon for past and future events.

Just thinking.

Concerning Joe McCarthy's post #13800

Joe, you are right on the money. The thing is; we would be surprised if Biden would attempt to use the military in that manner. If Biden loses the election to Trump; we would expect Biden to have a peaceful exchange of power. Biden could use his power to pardon his son, but we would all be surprised if he did this. Biden's respect for tradition and our Constitution would forbid him from doing these things that Trump would do in a heartbeat.

An 11-Year-Old Girl’s Fossil Find Is the Largest Known Ocean Reptile

When Ruby Reynolds and her father found a fossil on an English beach, they didn’t know it belonged to an 82-foot ichthyosaur that swam during the days of the dinosaurs.

An illustration shows a giant ichthyosaur carcass washed up on a beach with two small theropods investigating.
Fragments of an ichthyosaur jawbone from the Westbury Mudstone Formation in Somerset, England, suggest Ichthyotitan severnensis may have been 82 feet long, or twice the length of a city bus.Credit...Sergey Krasovskiy

I'm sorry, but I think it's against the law to use words like "Ichthyotitan severnensis" here in Beaufort County, SC.

Even if it was 82 feet long.

A fragment of meteorite which fell to earth in a quiet village in Gloucestershire may hold the answer to a question scientists have been puzzling over for decades: where did our planet's water come from?

The Winchcombe meteorite "streaked from space into the atmosphere as a spectacular green fireball" in 2021, said The Times. After search teams managed to recover a substantial amount of the space rock – around 300g – it was named after the village on which it fell.

MM, I have no idea who Steven A. Smith, who you linked to in your last post, is, but his logic escapes me.  For those of you who didn’t click, the gist of his message is summarized in the headline “Beat Trump at the Ballot Box, Not the Courtroom”.

Let me give you two examples that show how ridiculous this proposition is:

-  U.S. Senator  Robert Menendez of New Jersey (a Democrat), has been indicted by the (Biden) Justice Dept. alleging that he accepted bribes (gold bars, cash, a Mercedes Benz) in return for seeking favors for his bribers with the governments of Egypt and Qatar (Menendez had a lot of influence – until his indictment he was also chairman of  the Senate Foreign Relations Committee).   He is also accused of trying to influence/quash Justice Dept. criminal bank fraud proceedings against one of his bribers.  Menendez is up for re-election in November but he will certainly not get the Democratic nomination and there is zero chance he will be re-elected as an independent.  Is failing to return to the Senate punishment enough - should the federal bribery charges be dropped?

-  Assume that the mayor of your town, who is running for re-election in November, is arrested and booked on drunk driving charges.  Should the charges be dropped so that his only penalty is (possible) failure to be re-elected?

If you commit crimes, running for public office should not inoculate you from prosecution.

Time and time again Trump has crossed red lines that would have cratered the career of any previous presidential candidate, Republican or Democrat.  Steven A. Smith’s blather is just another attempt by the extreme right  to normalize ideas and behavior that virtually all Americans would have found totally unacceptable in the not too distant past.

Sharing a couple of photos that I took while attending Grandparents Day at Watterson yesterday with two of my grandkids. It is always such a special time to walk the "" hallowed halls" of our Alma mater reflecting on the classes, teachers & events of the 60's. I love torturing the grandkids by over-sharing my high school life from 60 years ago. As I walked the hallways, I ran into so many fellow alumni from the 60's that it had the effect of transporting me back to the changing of classes where we would hurriedly exchange a few words with friends (or pass the forbidden folded note). The day was made extra special by the celebration of the Mass by our Bishop. In his homily, he shared with the students how his parents grew up in Mumbai India & how, in order to provide better opportunities for their young children, decided to emigrate to America in 1971 where the Bishop was born in Toledo a year later.

All in all, it was a "walk down memory lane" kind of day. I took the opportunity to take one photo of the Armed Services dedication wall where many of our classmates will find their names. The other photo I took at another of the planned events planned which was an art show displaying all of the extraordinary talent of the BWHS art students. The most exceptional was this painting that won first prize. This senior student also won first place last year with a painting of an Ohio State football player.

Joe the way I heard it is "An apple a day keeps the doctor away, if you throw it hard enough."
Sorry Jim. Kids, don't think about chucking even a crab apple at our classmate, Dr. Jim, He would probably field it like Alan Trammel.

James Hamilton, M. D.

Joe McC and Jack,

It is said that "practice makes perfect". Well, after a few decades of practice, I still didn't get it perfect. But hey, don't lawyers also practice their profession? The similarly here is patients may die and clients may get the death penalty. I guess that those results are sort of similar 😕.

As for apples keeping the doctor away, if that were true then "big pharma" would probably find a way to make them a prescription medication requiring a doctor's visit anyway.

Jim

We are beyond disappointed that the House would give aid to secure the borders of foreign countries, but gave nothing to allow the Border Patrol to secure the safety of the United States. There’s nothing more backwards. I wouldn’t have even expected tax payer’s dollars. They could have given us policy, and that would have been enough."    Brandon Judd, President, National Border Patrol Council

John Jackson

I will point out that the National Border Control Council (referenced by MM above), the labor union that represents 18,000 border patrol agents, endorsed the bipartisan border bill worked out in early March by Senators James Lankford (Republican of Oklahoma), Kyrsten Sinema (Independent from Arizona) and Chris Murphy (Democrat of Connecticut).

After expressing initial support, Congressional  Republicans torpedoed the bill soon after it was introduced after Trump said  “A border deal now would be another gift to the radical left Democrats” and made it known he wanted no progress on the border because he wanted it to remain an issue for the November election.

This link contains an endorsement of the bill by National Border Control Council chairman Brandon Judd (quoted by MM above):

John, Brandon Judd gave that statement yesterday following the House's passage of the $95 billion Ukraine bill which Speaker Johnson bundled into a much larger foreign aid package, with no provision for border securtiy, following a private meeting with Democratic leadership. Johnson thus reversed his months-long pledge to never advance foreign aid without first securing our own border.

04/22/24 06:46 PM #13818

Joseph Gentilini

I understant that MM (#13813) is disappointed that the US House would give aid to secure the borders of other countries without doing the same to our own borders.  The fact is that the House had a bipartisan bill to fund our own border security, something that had something that Democrats and Republicans wanted.  Why was this bill not passed?  Because trump told the republicans to kill it, which they did.  The republicans in the House just show they cannot govern!  Joe

Janie Albright (Blank)

So very sad to tell you that our classmate and friend Lyn Zelinski passed away last week. She had pancreatic cancer for last 4 years but had been doing so well. She was at our 75th birthday party at the India-Oak. Thanks to David Barbour for seeing this on facebook and letting me know. I have updated our In Memory page.

Sorry to hear about Lyn.

Just going back through her bio I was reminded that we had a little something in common. She was on the ski patrol at Clear Fork ski area - up in Northwest Ohio, near Butler. Clear Fork is where I had my best day ever in competitive skiing - back when we were 18.

I seem to recall sharing this and having a chuckle with her at a reunion - maybe 10 or 15 years back. We were joking about the mamouth 210 feet of vertical descent at Clear Fork "mountain".

Now she's resting in comfort.

Break Time:

Yes, I have too much time on my hands (still not driving). I have time to listen to my favorite You Tube performer, Allie Sherlock.

If you have never seen or heard her, she's a young Irish girl who became a "busker" in downtown Dublin, Ireland when she was 11. She was on "Ellen" when she was just 12. She must be about 18 now and still puts out her great music on Grafton Street for the shoppers, and the tourists who come just to see her. She has her own YouTube channel and is popular all over the englsish speaking world. I think she's terrrific and I hope you find some of her individual videos. She is often joined by freinds or evern people who step out of the crowd to sing with her.
