Dave,

I have not run across too many Buckeyes here in Colorado Springs. I guess many prefer the heat, humidity and hurricanes of the South to the height, hypoxia and hypothermia of the Rockies!

No Jim,

It's just a shorter drive.

Actually, Mary and I used to have friends in Denver who graduated from Ohio State and the husband worked for a while in Columbus as a life insurance agent under one of my cousins (who managed the Columbus office of either New York Life, or Midland Mutual?). They moved to Denver and he was president of the Denver "Ohio State Club", which, I think, had a pretty sizable membership.  When the Denver Broncos drafted Randy Gradishar (the greatest player still not in the NFL Hall of Fame!!!) in the first round back about 1974, my friend and his wife met the Gradishar's and helped them get to know the city.

During the Vietnam "baby lift" my friends adopted a Vietnamese baby. But the paperwork was taking too long for their patience, so my friend flew to Oakland to literally "get" their baby and bring it back himself. We were among a small group of friends who were at the old Stapleton Airport to greet Phil when he brought the baby back home. Among that small group were the Gradishars, and my (then) 2 year old son spent most of the waiting time sitting on Randy Gradishar's lap.

Mike Boulware-

Appreciate your comment about Don Brown. You're a great guy yourself! =)

No offense to the priests and religious in our class, but am glad Don left the seminary!

David Mitchell-

I surely do remember Tricia!  Didn't know she married your son!  Tricia's parents helped chaperone when I took Tricia's class to the Adena Home and the Indian Mounds in Chillicothe the year Tricia was in fifth grade.

Yes, Kevin (and our daughter Jennie) both graduated from Watterson.  I'll ask him if he remembers Megan!

My friend Julie (Smith/Garlock) said her sister Barb Betts already called her to let her know that she and Mike were meeting you for an ice cold beer!  =)  Hope it's a Harp to celebrate St. Paddy's Day!

More odd coincidence.

I occasionally drive a young fund manager (everything to do with energy funds - not pharmaceuticals) for Blackrock who also graduated from Notre Dame, as your article mentions. He and his wiffe live on Hilton Head. And I believe one of John Jackson's sons worked under him a few years ago when he was at Blackrock.

I also have an ex brother-in-law named Ed Dowd, but he doesn't work for Blackrock funds, as the one in your article does.

So my significant other, who teaches first, second and third graders from a broad cross-section of Central Florida neighborhoods at a Montessori magnet school, asked her students, to celebrate President's Day, to write down what problems each of them would want to address if they were the President.

I don't know whether to be heartened or depressed at how closely their concerns aligned with my own.

As I was scrolling through my FB feed this morning, I discovered a sponsored post from the Norbertines of St. Michael's Abbey which I believe is the motherhouse for the Norbertine priests which is Fr. Steve's order.  I am providing a link to their website and to a video that has been recently produced.   https://theabbotscircle.com/city-of-saints-the-architect/.....

“The Architect” tells the story of Jean-Louis Pages, the world-renowned French architect of the new St. Michael's Abbey constructed in Orange County, California.
In this heart-wrenching and powerfully-providential story, Jean-Louis and his wife share how the intervention of a saint introduced them to St. Michael's Abbey and this divinely inspired project.

Tonight I am feeling really old - and sad. I feel so old I can remember waaaaay back when Americans were against Communist aggression.

But today we hear that Comrade Putin has two new public relations agents working for him.

"Tuckeryo Rose" Carlson and Donaldski Ivanivich Trumpski are singing his praises and complimenting his "genius".

And meanwhile JoBi's response is a slap on the wrist.

These are sad times.

I awakened this morning to a pristine blanket of snow against the azure Colorado sky. Upon opening the garage door to begin shoveling the driveway I was greeted by three does and a majestic buck who had not yet shed his rack of 6-point antlers. They presented no threat to me nor I to them so I watched them nibble a few needles off of a mugo pine in our yard. As I started with the snow shovel they casually retreated down the street.

Quite the opposite scenario of those on the other side of this world who's snowy awakening was to Russian tanks approaching their homeland.

It's Dr. Zhivago with all the romance taken out.

Russians killing Russians.

Horrible, horrible.

This one is going to take a long time to spin out.

And yes, characterizing it as Cold War II seems a pretty accurate prediction at this point.

The only good thing about it is that one word: cold.

Everybody pray it stays that way.

Meanwhile, the names Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz would not mean much to me until yesterdaay.  But after learning that they quit the Manhatten District Attorney's office probe into Donald Ivanovich Trumpski's legal case has me wondering, Is there something rotten in Denmark?

Word is that their new boss, Alvin Bragg, seems to think the case is weak, but why is that happening now after all this effort to gather the evidence?

One wonders if there are deeper reasons - like foul play afoot?

Is someone being threatened? Does someone have "something" on these guys? Are these more evil times than we already knew?

Strange.

Can someone, anyone, please tell me WHY the Pope has not made a decaration, or whatever, that those hundreds of individuals who didn't receive baptism because the priest officiating said "I bpatise you" instead of "We baptise you."  So by Roman Catholic edicts any that have died in the meantime cannot enter heaven.  So that Marriages are null and void and the people involved have been living in Sin.  All he has to. should do, is grant an exception.

But what do I know.

And Mike it is not Russians killing Russians.  It is Putin's russian minions killing UKRANIANS.  Read the history; Ukrania was in existence hundreds of years before russia.  Enough.

I stand corrected: they are a Russian-speaking country  - actually the language as it evolved is a blend of Russian with a dollop of Polish - but you are right about the history.

Joe McC.,

I, too, have been concerned about the baptisms in which the word "We" was used instead of "I". I have no particular knowledge of Canon Law but I suspect there are Canon lawyers who have probably reviewed, or are reviewing, these cases.

In this day and age when pronouns have become a matter of extreme controversy, this may be one of the more interesting stories for the press. Of course words are important and go far beyond their dictionary meaning. Although it may sound trivial to many, non-Catholics and Catholics, the Church takes this issue very seriously. As for the sacrament of baptism the word "I" is a substitute for Christ. You, and I, agree that it should probably be a matter to be resolved by the Pope.

If I recall correctly there is such a thing as "baptism by desire". Would that be applicable here? And could that apply to the other sacraments these people have received?

If any of our classmates who have entered the religious vocations are following this story and are seeing this thread, please give us your expertise and what, if any, options would be possible.

Jim

Great Question Joe.

I was going to ask it myself a few days back but I got I go tpre-empted by Comrade Putin and his confusion over what is and is not his.

I mean, really! Thousands of baptisms, marriages, and even ordinations are suddenly invalid?

Mike,

In case you, along with almost all of our classmates, do not know - I am Ukranian.  My grandparents and my Aunt on my mothers side were born in the Ukraine, they moved to the U.S.A. when my Aunt was six years old.  My Mother was the first generation born in the U.S.A.; ergo, I am 50% Ukranian.

I am sure there are similar stories among our classmates, you cannot always tell by the last name.

By the way, I thought I would share a scan of my first venture into advertising.  This exact Ad was in the Columbus DispatchMarch 26, 1965.  Later, after changing Lady to Madam, we ran it in the Sunday Women's section of the Columbus Dispatch on three out of four Sundays a month.

02/26/22 09:45 AM #10670

John Jackson

Joe, I can’t believe that at the tender age of 17 you created an ad suggesting a lady could have “an affaire”?  Was this by any chance an independent study project for a Sister Michelle English class?

Your Frenchification of “affair” is a nice touch – really ups the titillation factor.

From ads like this it was just a hop, skip and a jump to the sad state of moral depravity we find ourselves in today.

Joe: A couple of questions:

Do you know anything specific about your ancestors/ancestry on that side?

As for that ad you mentioned: doesn't  it kinda negate the spirit of having an affair when you get to the point of picking out stemware and furniture?

Joe,
At this juncture we can all say we are Ukranian. As long as there are world class idiots like Adolph Poopin trodding the planet. This episode of world history will not end well for anyone. I read that in a history book once.

Is it just me? Or are any of you also having flashbacks from 1956, watching the newsreels from Budapest, as men and boys ran out from behind buldings to throw a Molotov cocktail at a Russian tank, often to be gunned down by the machine gunner in the turret?

---------------

I just heard a frustrating news item. As is their regular proceedures, the Pentagon is scrapping another group of older aircraft, simply because of their age - not their condition - whcih is still perfectly flyable - granted with some repairs needed here and there. It will be about 120 planes, roughly divided evenly between F-16s, F-15s, and A-10 "Warthogs" (thee single most efffective close support tank buster ever desinged). They will be flown to that military "graveyard" in the Arizona desert where thousands of planes are retired for parts scavening. These planes are still quite functional and could have been given during the past year to Ukraine, who has many pilots qualified to fly these aircraft, or at least enough instructor pilots to train many of their fellow countrymen.

Doesn't this smack of the rich man throwing away food while his neighbors starve?
