Yesterday, I was a stand-in sponsor for my grandson's Confirmation at IC.  His brother was chosen as his sponsor, but he got snowed in at a Watterson retreat in northwest Ohio.  Anyway, I thought that this would be a good time to share this photo with everyone.  The occasion was IC's Confirmation when I was in 5th grade.  Look who I am walking out of church with.....could that be none other than my Message Forum rival....Mike McLeod?!!

Hey Dave- been here just east of Columbus enjoying retirement and reading the Forum. I'm much more of a reader than a poster. I actually was in contact w Suzie for several years but we lost track of each other. I sent an email to the address I have for her but didn't get a response yet. I can assure you and John that neither of us had any idea of our "reputation" way back at OLP. I love reading the Forum- keeps me informed and aware of different sides of issues I don't think to consider. And I really appreciate Jim's medical comments especially on Covid. Love your stories about the people you drive too.
I'll do a better job of chiming in once in awhile.

Ha! Looking at that picture reminds me of how much I hated wearing glasses, mm. I tried so hard to fake my way through the eye exam.  It was crushing, absolutely crushing. My life as a totally handsome dude: gone. My chances of going to Hollywood and being one of the Mouseketeers and successfully  romancing Annette Funichello: crushed.

I've never been the same.

In the meantime two more friends who didn't get vaccinated are seriously ill with covid. Makes ya think.

Meanwhile I would hope the education of every child in this country includes being taught about this essay -- and the story behind it.

Walking Tall

Only in the mountain town of Ouray, Colorado!

This was in our Colorado Springs Gazette 28 Jan 2022. When we are sick, injured or just down, let us remember this determined dog.

(Note to Theresa Zeyen (Kucsma): Glad you appreciated my posts on COVID, etc. I try to keep updated on certain medical topics that may be of interest to our classmates.)

Just some ramblings.

Last week a music industry legend died - Koss of Koss headphones.

Last year when I mentioned a list of Columbus restaurants I forgot to add the Lavash Cafe.  The Lavash Cafe is located at 2985 N. High Street in Clintonville. It is basically a Mediterranean cafe.  Owned by the family of my nephew's high school friend.

Which reminds me.  Can anyone tell me if any of the following restaurants are still good:

   1. Katzinger's  Deli on Third Street in German Village;

   2.  Barcelona Restaurant in German Village;

   3.  Old Mohawk Restaurant in German Village;  and

   4.  The Chinese Restaurant in the Lane Avenue Shopping Center.

saw this on joe donahue's fb page. I often think about our childhoods and how idyllic they feel given what the world looks like to kids today. Childhood should be magiclal and perhaps it still is. I surely hope so. But the particular earthiness and magic and intimacy and innocence that we had will never be duplicated. And then of course the next generation will say the same as they fade away. Rinse. Repeat. Turn turn turn.

WE ARE A GENERATION THAT WILL NEVER COME BACK.
A generation that walked to school and then walked back.
A generation that did their homework alone to get out asap to play in the street.
A generation that spent all their free time in the streets with their Friends.
A generation that played hide and seek when dark.
A generation that made mud cakes.
A generation that collected sports cards.
A generation that found, collected and washed & Returned empty coke bottles to the local grocery store for 5 cents each , then bought a Mountain Dew and candy bar with the money.
A generation that made paper toys with their bare hands.
A generation who bought vinyl albums to play on record players.
A generation that collected photos and albums of clippings of their life experiences as a Kid.
A generation that played board games and cards on rainy days.
A generation whose TV went off at midnight after playing the National Anthem.
A generation that had parents who were there.
A generation that laughed under the covers in bed so parents didn't know we were still awake.
A generation that is passing and unfortunately it will never return no matter how hard we try.
I loved Growing up when I did. it was the best of times.

We don't have any that walk upright but we raise Brittanies and they certainly are amazing dogs with such sweet dispositions. Unfortunately some  are also quite clever and quickly learn how to open their own gates plus those of all their buddies in the kennel. Then of course let's open the main gate too and have a party. Thanks for sharing that story.

Calling on the United States to do the same as Covid is now an endemic disease.

Mike,

You left out two vitally importand items on your list;

A generation that used a special "calendar" to mark the week - Sunday night Roy Rodgers, followed by The Walt Disney Hour.

And a generation that sat around in the kitchen on Monday nights, helping our mothers lick and paste S&H Green stamps into the stamp books.

Dave:

I also missed listing another something, a familiar refrain from our childhood. At least I'm wondering if this does sound familiar to others or if it was a peculiarity of my own family.

Whenever a child in the house was acting up, or just acting odd, the parent or parents would use this catch-all phrase to explain it away:

"Oh, he/she is just going through a phase."

You could've been on an ax-murderer kick and that was how they'd dismiss it.

I kinda don't think people use that phrase any more.

I'm sure I am not the first person to say this out loud, but if you made me guess who the next president of the united states is gonna be, I'd say Mike Pence.

Bold prediction Mike.

But as of this week, you may be onto something. After his speech in Orlando, he's suddenly getting a lot of quiet, behind-the-scenes support from a number of closet Republicans. As a rather conservative Republican myself, I'm suposed to like him, but I don't really think much of the guy. However, since JoBi probably sealed his own political death warrrant in Afghanistan, I'd take Mike any day over his former lying, cheating, whore-mongering, draft dodging, dangerously sociopathic boss.

Someday, I'll stop sugar-coating my opinions and tell you all how I really feel.

02/09/22 04:11 PM #10589

James Hamilton, M. D.

Dave,

No need to sugar coat things, the adjectives you always choose to use convey your feelings well.

Other than Afghanistan are you happier with President Biden? What adjectives would you apply to him?

You seem somewhat lukewarm to Mike Pence. Is VP Harris doing a better job in that office in your opinion? Do you think he could win the presidency if nominated?

As a stated Republican who would be your choices for the 2024  President/Vice President ticket?

Inquiring minds would like to know...

Jim

Dave - maybe you were being tongue in cheek but Pence as next prez looks like an obvious call at this point. People are looking for character. Biden does not project that sufficiently. Trump never had it in the first place. If the dems can't put somebody with charisma out there a republican that knows the difference between gestapo  and gaspatcho is in like flint.

This article points to a very disturbing memo from the DHS......Question.....Who is it that is allowed to decide what is "mis-information, dis-information, mal-information? (MDM,,,,just what we need another government acornym!).  I am also sharing clips from the past  two years worth of Dr. Leana Wen on CNN.  She now claims the science has changed on masks.......no, the science never changed - the "narrative" changed as political winds shifted.  And first she couldn't wait to have her 1 and 4 year old children vaccinated, and now she has seemingly had a change of heart (er science).  We are not China (yet) and freedom of speech and to redress our government when they dictate what, when and where we can participate fully in our society, is fixed firmly in our Constitution.

Jim and Mike,

"You say Gazpacho, I say Gestapo. Let's call the whole thing off".

(isnt Margorie a cutie? Wow!).

(you all know I can't spell)

--------------

Jim.

To begin with, I do not think JoBi is a very intelligant guy. Nor do I think he is very storng. And I lean toward a more non-liberal direction anyway. And I am befuddled by his dual stance on abortion, which I oppose, except in cases of rape, incest, or endangerment to the mother. But just to get any kind of limits at all, I would accept some comprimise. And let God be my judge. It all rests on my belief that the unborn baby is in fact a human life.

And I thought he pulled the single greatest boondoggle in our life time in Afghanistan. I'm actually in that group that thought we should have stayed in th efirst place, but it was negotiated by Trump and Pompeo, and allowed to get way out of control (financially - the civilian contractos) by Obama and Bush in the first place, so there is plenty of bame to go around.

Yet I voted for him. I voted not so much for Joe, as I voted against Trump. I simply wanted the toilet scum removed from the White House.

Who did I really favor - NONE of the above. We do not get more choices in this country. So when they are both to my disliking, I have to go wit the lesser of two evils. I would have prefered John Kasich, or or even Jeb Bush. But I learned at the polls that SO Carolina does not even allow a write-in candidate for President - kind of a shock when I realized that.

Remember - On the previos election I voted for the constitutionla Party - the anti-abortion, pro medical-marijauna lawyer from Nashville. He and his wife had set up and funded orphanages in Romania. At least they were on the ballot.

My current favorite would be Marlyland Governor Larry Hogan, but he denies having any interest. So we shall have to wait and see. Or I woud love to see Ben Sasse, from Nebraska. He's almost the opposite of his idiotic neighbor Josh Hawley from Missouri. My real concern is that these crazy Trump liars are becoming so dangerous with their thousands of cases of death threats against state and county voting officails that we may be headed for much more dangerous and unstable times.

And I do sincerely hope that Donald Trump will be indicted and found guilty on many, many, many, counts.

RE the mask thing here is a sociological commentary that came out a year ago. Which of course is equivalent to eons given the info-blitzkreig. But it's prescient in many ways.  Here's the summary they provide, with phrases I emphasized given the discussion on the table, and a link to the essay.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1473325020973330

Tracing explanatory narratives of mask-wearing throughout COVID-19, we argue that multiple narratives contribute to the global experience of COVID-19, making it as much a social and political object as it is a scientific one. This assumption drives our commitment to take seriously alternative narratives that do not conform to dominant ones in order to examine how structures of power might privilege particular types of ‘truths’ and with what consequences. We see this reflective piece as a re-articulation of social work’s historic call to interrogate dominant ways of knowing, particularly the ways in which science obscures its own power and politics and sidelines other narratives in the process.

So sad to hear the news about Lynn Stoughton. She was always kind and fun and generous with her friendship. Our Watterson family has lost another great person. Rest in peace, Lynn.
