Dave,

Sorry, wrong answer. You must have been thinking of why Volkswagen beetles had tail lights. 🐞

Jim,

I can't figure out how to put a hand-rainsing emoji here but I'll take a shot at trying to answer your question.

I think that you accidentally, or perhaps intentionally, put a clue to the answer in your question - the word "predators."

When all seems safe for the deer, and the other other animals you mentioned, and they are grazing in a field the white tail is down. But when there is a sense of danger the white tail is raised and the white color is a signal to the other deer.  Either there is a danger because of a predator or that the old guy watching them (because he is going to do a sketch or painting of them or take a photo of them) could be a danger.  Usually when one sees deer running away their tails are up.

That's my guess on it.

Ok Jim: My guess is so you can advertise on their ass.

Larry,

Essentially and partially correct!

Deer use their tails to signal various messages to other deer such as calm, safe and danger.

The other thing is that the white rumps are easily seen thus the leaders of the herds can be followed by other members. This is especially true of antelopes. Out on the plains of eastern Colorado and northern New Mexico (where the deer and the antelope play 🎶) one can see large herds of antelope playing "follow the leader" when they get spooked. I am told that antelope are dumb in that they run in a big circle and end up back where they started. Thus a hunter can just wait until they return.

Mike,

It can certainly advertise their presence in a brown winter field!

"white rumps" - now there's a topic we could really get into some deep discussion about - or maybe not !

Ohhysta's anyone?  Or maybe Shree-imp?

This guy  - Larry Toomer and his wife run the "Bluffton Oyster Company", the last remaining commerical oyster compnay left on our May River - about a mile back up into town from my "remote" location down river.

Our local shrimp and oyster operations are dying diue to cheap competition from "farm raised" shrimp from Brazil, Thailand , and Viet Nam. And our oysters , er, excuse me, Ohhystas are simply to die for!

Oh, and those are "Blue Crab".

The May River is Johnny Mercer's inspiration for his song "Moon River". And Bluffton was Pat Conroy's temporary home while he was wrriting "Prince of Tides" (set in Bluffton)

Deer bumper stickers and advertisements! Don't let the marketing industry in on this one!

Mike -- Umm, for a guy who can decipher Gerald Manly Hopkins, I don't think you put much effort into reading Mr Dylan. I think his point is to journey far past the haunted trees, far from the reach of crazy sorrow.

Sorry Mark. Not familiar with that guy. Was he some sort of beatnik folksinger?

Mike --  Who put the bop in the bop shoo bop shoo bop, who put the nik in the nik shoo beat beatnik? I think you are thinking of Dylan Thomas.

Hey all. There were a few tubs my rescuers grabbed as I was forced to leave my home May 28, 2016.   The flood took my home - and the homes of so many of my neighbors.   I have just been unable to look in the tubs.  Too emotional.  I was afraid that seeing the contents would finalize that some items I dreamt of were actually gone forever.   Well, I’m going through the tubs and I am overwhelmed at the contents.   Little treasures from my childhood. Anyone remember these book?

Oh my.   Here’s another.  Probably received this small holy card at mass.

James Hamilton, M. D.

Peggy,

Good choice of items for that tub - things that were irreplaceable. I can only imagine losing your home and possessions to the flood. When we were evacuated from the fire in 2012, our neighborhood, by the Grace of God and His firefighters, was spared.

Glad you made it out safely.

Peggy, I am so happy that some of the irreplaceable items from your home were able to have been salvaged.  Hopefully, as you continue to unpack, you will experience pleasant memories that make you smile.

I thought that all of you classmates who have taken up residence far away from Columbus would be interested to learn of this new $2 billion undertaking planned for central Ohio.  It is slated to open sometime late 2019.

Peggy,

I doubt most of us can imagine the losses you have experienced. It's encouraging to see what family has meant to you, and hope your return to the Columbus area will open new doors of opportunity to you.

And thanks again for reaching out to the whole class with your party.

And Frank,

That's  "huevos rancheros".

Mr. Mark and/or Mr. Michael.  Can either, or both, of you please explainwhy they cannot producer a movie like "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming"?  I think we need another good comedy.

Aside from the above.  My wife read the recent story in our local paper concerning the arrest of one Stormy Daniels in Columbus.  She asked ME if I had any knowledge of a place called "Sirens".  To which I calmly answered YES, and so did she.  Then I went on to explain that we pass it a number of times when in Columbus and visit "Yanni's" greek food restaraunt.  She thenn said "Oh,that's what that builing contains.

She then asked if I remembered the incident in the late Seventies on North High, Short North, where a "Dancer" was on a trapezze that swung out into the sidewalk.  But this time the traapezze broke and se landedd on somee poor customer.

Yes, I know of the place; it was a few doors North of my Mother's business and I passed it when I walked North to buy a coke.  No Dave, they weren't open when I walked by.

Mary Margaret,

Thanks for that link/report on Planet Oasis.

Although Ohio is not known as a "vacation destination" to much of the USA, let alone the world, it is a state that has its own type of beauty and, INMHO, does not need another theme park. The areas both north and SE of Columbus have always been intriguing to me for their open spaces and rolling hills. I was actually disappointed when, some 40 plus years ago, Alum Creek Dam was created and the reservoir covered much of that scenic land. Chuck Coghlan's family had some land up there where several of us spent many days exploring, fishing and sledding. It is now under water.

It sounds like it's a done deal. But is this what Central Ohio really wants? I would love to hear what those classmates who still live there think.

Ditto Jim,

I wish Glimcher would stick to shopping centers.

I have often wished somebody with deep pockets would develop something in the way of upscale, yet understated luxury "resort" (of a quieter nature - horses, hiking, golf, etc.) down in rural southeastern Ohio - using the natural beauty of the Hocking Hills and helping to to create jobs for a relatively poor part of the State.

Peggy, I am so sorry for all that you lost. Thanks for sharing the small treasures that you have refound. You are right, I am sure that many of us had the same or similar items back then and I am glad that they have found their way back into your life.

I shared the following on my Facebook page today:

Just when I wonder about the true value of being on social media, I have something like this that shows up on one of the feeds I follow. Patriotism and faith singing out in this impromptu video shared by one of our military members. Belief in God and country is a blessing many choose to denigrate in today's self-centered culture, but hope abounds in the pure sincerity springing forth from their voices.  Don't miss the last two minutes, I almost did not watch until the end.

Mary Margaret, Jim, Dave,

Don't watch this.

Frank, I think you may be able to handle this. Yeah, pretty likely.
