Jack,

I am truly impressed with your memory and ability to attach names to faces! Also, cute story regarding Coach Walker.

Dave,

Happy 70th!

Thanks Kathy

Mark,

You may be right. It may have been after school. But I forgot to tell my punchline to the story. The girls gave the cheer and just as I was releasing my shot, they yelled "Sink it Mitchell, Sink it!  The irony of it caught me and I immediately burst out laughing as I let go of the shot, clanging it hard off the back of the rim an out. (that cheer always used the first name)

p.s. I think that guy who "beat you out" has gone south somewhere, and being such an introvert, rarely has much of anything to say.

Jim

Thanks, but Silly me. I thought my story was about Coach Shay and Coach Mentel.

Dr. Jim,

The K of C building was located on S. Sixth St., very close to Grant Hospital.  It's name was changed to the Salesian Center and then to the St. John Bosco Center.  All of the uses centered on youth activities.

It is now being reinvented as an apartment building.

Fred,

That is the building I remember; thanks for tracking it down and the history behind it. Apartments? The final resting place for all old historic places. Probably will have a first floor Starbucks.

Tim,

WELCOME BACK!

Thank God! And here I was worried all this time that Tim had taken a "long Winter's nap". Things should get interesting again now that your back.

And I think the Bucks have to go through Xavier pretty soon - if they both get that far. I have a daughter who is a Xavier Alum, so my loyalties are split.

Years ago I got to go with my daughter to the "Cross-Town Shootout" - an annual grudge match in Cincinnati between U. of Cincinnati and Xavier. It's a big deal in Cincy every year. Nasty Bob Huggins was still coaching at U. of C. (what a jerk - even to his own players). The late (and wonderful guy) Skip Prosser was still at Xavier befor he went to Wake Forrest and died of a heart attack after a few good years there.

U.C. Bearcats were rated 4th in the country and Xavier was about 25th. Xavier blew them out of the old Cincinnati Gardens! (back before Xavier built their new on-campus Cintas Arena). Only time I ever saw a full-court press cause 5 straigh turnovers! The crowd was in a frenzy!  It was something like a 25 point lead at half time. You could hardly hear yourself in the arena. I told Megan after that game that I had not heard an arena crowd get that loud since I was a kid watching Lucas and Havlicek thumping Indiana one night in St. John Arena.

A few years back, I was working at nearby "Sun City" - a big retirement community near Bluffton. An older man drove up and parked near us in a golf cart with a big Ohio State cover on his cart - (not all that unusual here). Meanwhile I always wore a white baseball cap with bright blue "Xavier" on the front. This was just after Thad Motta had left Xavier to coach at OSU. The man walks over to me and pointing at my hat asked, "Did you go to that school?" I said "no, but my daughter did."  And he said, "My son used to coach there."  Realizing who he must be (and he is an older clone of his son) I pointed to his golf cart and asked, laughing - "Well does he coach at that school now?". He said yes. So we introduced ourselves and became sort of friends. I realized later that his daughter (Thad's sister) was one of the teachers at our church school for a few years. Then one night I saw Mr. Motta running the scorer's desk at our grade shool basketball games. He did that for about a year or two. That was 6 or 8 years ago and I am out of touch with him now.

The world is a tiny place.

OMG!

Maryland-Baltimore County (never heard of it) just beat Virginia.

Biggest upset in NCAA tourney History!

And all this time I thought the earth was round, and water flowed downhill ???

Go Muskies!  One of the first (and primary) things I learned at X was that "UC Sucks"!  I've still got a t-shirt with that enblazoned on the front that we wore to every game against UC that we played.  Remember many basketball games watching Luther Rackley and Bob Quick playing at Schmit Fielhouse on the campus.  Also remember football games (where the soccer field is now) watching John Shinners and Danny Abramowitz play there and later in the NFL!  XU is a great little college, and Cincinnati a great town!

Mary Clare Hummer (Bauer)

Hope you’ve been back to see the campus recently, Al. If not, you’re in for quite a treat—hard to recognize some of the old areas. And if you get a chance to go to a game at the Cintas Center, go fir sure. Fantastic college basketball venue!!

Clare

Dave,

Happy Belated 70th!  Wow I cannot believe we all turn 70 this year.  And, being in Virginia, last night was a terrible disappointment.  But the boyd from Univ Maryland BC out played the Cavs all the way.  It was very disappointing for UVA after winning the ACC and a great year.

Fred,

Loved the picture my sister sent!  I woke up in Cairo to your smiling face.  Thanks for all the historical comments on the forum.  I enjoing ready about Ole Columbus.  I actually swam in the pool at the Knights of Columbus buildings

Thanks John,

And yes, we have arrived at that glorious time in life.

Alan,

Yes. Go Muskateers - All for One!   My youngest (Megan) was there about the time David West dominated and she also had a guard (name ?) who made the Denver Nuggests roster for a few years as her science class partner. I had a great photo of her in her Graduation gown standing next to coach Skip Prosser with his arm around her - (and I lost it!)

And ditto what Clare said. The great game I spoke of was in the old Cincy Gardens, but the new Cintas Center is great. Saw a few games there but none as exciting as that one "Cross Town Shoot Out". The whole campus has exploded into a village. But fear not, I beleive the old "Dana Gardens" is still there! Some things never change.

Pop Quiz. Does anybody know who Gonzaga's most famous graduate was?

Hint; A smooth "crooner". And a low handicap golfer.

And here I was hoping for a Buckeye vs. Muskateer matchup. Oh well, now I can go all out for X

And as for those Virginia Cavaliers, I can just hear Howard Cosell now, "Down goes Frasier"

Harry Lillis Crosby, Jr., AKA "Bing".

Golfing must be stressful.  He was playing a course in Spain, i think, when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

He had a connection to central Ohio.  For years he was a co-owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates with his friend John W. Galbreath.

Damn Fred, You are Good!

And he was so emotional about his Pirates in that '61 World Series with the Yankees that he refused to watch it live. He recorded it on some early version of Video tape and then watched it later when he knew his team had won. I still have a funny story about my bet on that series in 7th grade. (Oh Lordy, I may have already told it. Nah, this can't be starting already - I'm only just 70.

It may be true what you said about golf. Dad used to read the Obits in the Dispatch and every time he came across a story about another of his Medical colleagues dying on a golf course in Arizona, or Florida, he would yell out to mom and say, "Dorothy, I tell ya this 'retirement thing' is fatal. Everybody I know keeps dying from it."

Dave,

It was the the 1960 series, Pirates over the Yankees in 7 games.  Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th.

1961 was the Yankees over the Reds in 5 games.

We had the Sisters of St. Joseph, Baden Pa @ St. Andrew.  Baden is on the Ohio River just a little north of Pittsburgh.  I was one of a few Yankee fans who was foolish enough to voice my sentiments.  It wasn't a fun October for me.

John - So that's where that pool was! In the Knights of Columbus building. I have one of those "well-I'll-never-be-able-to unsee-that" images burned in my brain from being there one day and seeing a bunch of middle-aged, overweight, overly-hairy, and totally-naked men at the edge of that pool, standing like bears at a stream looking for passing salmon. I always wondered where I was when I saw that.

03/18/18 01:52 PM #2896

Fred,

U  R  correct Sir! (as usual). It was 1960. I made a bet with our new assistant pastor, Father Kenneth Grimes on my Pirates when we were down three games to one in our 7th grade classroom. And I was was boastful about it! He warned me and gave me a chance to retract but I insisted. After Mazeroski's winning shot, he came trotting over from the rectory to pay me the $5.00 on the spot in the classroom, in front of Sister (?) and all my classmates - who loved it.

When we moved back to Columbus he (then Pastor) realized who the new girl in the 7th grade class was, and while reading of a list of names early that school year, he paused after Megan'a last name, looked up and said, "I'm gonna get that $5.00 back." She knew the story and got the joke, while no one else did. She came home and told that story at dinner and I got a great laugh out of it.

(sorry if I told that one before - I think I may have.   Oh give me a break - I'm 70 for Pete's sake !)

Hey, I just noticed the Buckeye basketball roster has a Danny Hummer from Upper Arlington (with Air Force Acadamy behind his name) Anybody know who this kid is? And what's the Air Force Acacamy thing about?

Clare?

Uh oh, Dave. Either you’ve forgotten to read or forgotten that you read prior post #2755. I hope this is not an omen. I mean, com’on. You just reached the mountaintop last week.

Uhhh, Clare

Color me embarrased. Thanks for the reminder. I just circled back and re-read your post. That is really cool! Was he a star at U.A.?

(I can still read, I just can't remember what it was that I read.)

Maybe you already know that Cincinnati Gardens (5th 3rd Arena) built in 1949, was demolished last year. Last I heard, was to make way for manufacturing venue.

I will always remember Glen Campbell concert there around 71, with John Hartford and Jerry Reed as openers. Also, Dave & I had season tickes to Cyclones for a couple years.

Looking for recent news, I found this piece about a time capsule found in cornerstone during demolition. I'm sure there is more, but I'm tired of looking.

Oh well- all good things must come to an end....but to FSU-yuchhh!  Muskies overachieved so many years in the Tournament, I guess they"re due to underachive in one!!  Clare- never been to new Cintas Center- it was a parking lot when I was there!  Hope to get there before I run out of time.

Thge only thing I remember about the Gardens is watching the Royals and Oscar Robertson and the 76ers and Wilt Chamberlain play early NBA!  I'm sure the Muskies played some there (especiially against UC), but I can't remember going there for that.

Classmates!

I just discovered a very exciting part of our website that I had not seen before. It's a bit of "this day in history" stuff. Espcecially cool because of one of today's (or, I guess yesterday's) entrees. It seems that on this particullar day (or yesterday?) in 1947 , a "rocket driven sled on rails" was launched in New Mexico. Wow!

Now, I realize most of us have always wanted a "rocket driven sled" - on rails no less. I know I sure did. So glad we included this noteworthy item.

I am almost salivating over the prospect that our site may at some future point in time commemorate the invention of cellophane bags - a scientific breakthrough that allowed me transport my peanut butter sandwiches to the school cafeteria without spoiling!

Uhh huh!
