Monica Haban (Brown)

Dave Mitchell and all-  The Polis family has been part of St. Anthony's Maronite parish in Cincinnati for over 100 years.  Father George (Hijj) was very close to Steve.  Joe Polis said that he made several trips to see Steve in the past three months, and was on a family Zoom call with Steve the day before he died.

Fifteen years ago my husband Don and I were asked to "reach out" to the Maronites in our Columbus Diocese. We gathered the local Maronites for a Divine Liturgy and Lebanese dinner at the cathedral and undercroft.  Be assured that Steve was proud to be there!  Nearly every Sunday, there is a Maronite Divine Liturgy at St. Andrew Church at 4:30 pm.  It's a very small Maronite community in Columbus! Their pastor/Abouna comes from Dayton every week.  Several parts of the liturgy are celebrated in Aramaic. Email me if you're interested in more information.

My husband and I have been good friends with Steve for the past fifty years. I'll post something in our Memory column at a later time.

I will have to google Maronite branch of the Christian-Catholic family and learn something about it.

Thanks Monica,

I am assuming this has something to do with you and your husband's involvement with Middle-Eastern Christian causes in general. You might recall our conversation on our way into Clare's Christmas party in December of 2019. (that now seems like ages ago!)

I have had an interest in the plight of Middel-Eastern Christians since my older sister dated a Syrian Chrstian boy at Ohio State. It promped my dad into a full-blown explanation of the unique problem of Israel's mis-treatment and presuring toward those Christains living (for over 2000 years) on the "West Bank".

This is one of those sadly unknown (and very unpopular) stories here in the West - especailly about some of the atrocities committted against those Palestinians by the Israely Army over the generations since 1947. Even sadder when you consider American Evangelicals almost total ignorance of the issue and their blind loyalty toward the four big American Israely Political Lobbies.

Speaking of American ignorance, I will mention the elephant in the room.

I know we all just want this to go away, but I fear great violence in our nation's capital tomorrow. The President himself (whose phone call to Georgia's Secretary of State - I read it word for word - was beyond outrageous) has been inciting these right-wing gangs of thugs to come and create havoc tomorrow in the Capital.

SHAME ON HIM !

And according to news reports, many of them are already there, claiming they will not allow the vote to elect Joe Biden to proceed. How they plan to do that is a frightening mystery. The "Proud Boys" have already announced they plan to create violence, and I'm sure the "Prayin' Patriots", the "Boogaloo Boiz", the "3 Percenters", the "Michigan Militia" and many others will have members there. Oh, and I'm sure the idiots in some local Antifa group will be stupid enough to show up and throw gasoline on the fire.

And to think we have this twisted man urging them to come and get crazy.

I keep thinking there would be more people from what once was the Republican Party speak up but sadly there are few;   (but bless them anyway)

- Those ten former Secretaries of Defense (Republican and Democrat)

- Liz Cheney from Wyoming (one of the few Republicans with any "balls")

- Young Senator Ben Sasse from Nebraska (I'm really getting to like him)

- Senator Toomey from Pennsylvania

- Paul Ryan (thanks Buddy, but it was a bit too little, too late)

- Even Mike Pence has said he will refuse to play along on this one (Wow! A miracle unto itself!)

I have been praying for, and worrying about my country a lot lately, and tomorrow I will be praying all the more. My prayer will be to beg God to stop the madness, and allow peace to filter through the anger. Or at least, let the demonstrrations kind of fizzle out without much harm to the Capital Police, the National Guardsmen, or any civilian on-lookers.

But maybe God has more punishment in store for us yet.

Dave:

Today will be ugly but it will pass.

Misinformation and q-anon crazies are unfortunately here to stay.

Here's a handy guide to some of their most common misconceptions - or "lies" if you don't feel like being polite about it. I'm in favor of a long-term bi-partisan fact finding enterprise to reassure a reeling electorate about all this so we can proceed to deal with more pragmatic issues over the next four years.

No, ‘glitches’ in Dominion Voting Machines did not change vote tallies.

Claim: Dominion Voting Systems, which makes software that local governments around the nation use to help run their elections, deleted votes for President Trump.

Fact: There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, including the machines with Dominion software, according to the federal agency that oversees election security.

In the weeks after the election, President Trump and his supporters spread baseless claims about Dominion. The claims included theories that “software glitches” changed vote tallies in several states, including Michigan and Georgia. No such changes were ever found.

Mr. Trump and his supporters subsequently claimed that Dominion had hidden evidence of voter fraud, both by destroying machines or removing parts within the machines. Mr. Trump repeated those claims during a call with Georgia’s secretary of state last weekend. Gabriel Sterling, a top election official in Georgia, said Monday of the claims of election fraud in the state, “This is all easily, provably false.”

No, politicians in Georgia did not prevent an analysis of absentee ballots.

Claim: President Trump and his supporters have claimed that absentee ballots in Georgia were rife with fraud and that state officials have not fully investigated.

.

Fact: Election officials have audited absentee ballots and found “no fraudulent absentee ballots.”

The Georgia secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, ordered law enforcement and election investigators to conduct an audit of more than 15,000 absentee ballot envelopes in Cobb County, based on a complaint that signatures were not adequately checked there. The audit found no fraud. Mr. Raffensperger has said that he also plans a statewide audit of each county’s signature-match policies and procedures.

Georgia has already conducted two recounts, both by hand and machine, of all five million ballots cast in the state. No voting fraud was found.

No, thousands of votes in Arizona were not changed to favor Biden.

Claim: In an interview on the conservative cable channel Newsmax in December, the Arizona Republican chairwoman, Kelli Ward, said 200,000 ballots were digitally changed to give the victory to Mr. Biden, and Representative Paul Gosar amplified the falsehood on Twitter.

Fact: Audits in Arizona have found no evidence of voter fraud, or changed vote tallies.

While early results in Arizona showed a close race, the final count revealed that Mr. Biden had won the state by more than 10,000 votes.

Audits in Arizona’s four largest counties, which make up 86 percent of all votes in the state, turned up no evidence of systematic voter fraud.

No, election workers didn’t stuff fraudulent ballots into suitcases.

Claim: President Trump’s supporters have pointed to a video as proof that ballots were pulled from a “suitcase” at a vote-counting center in Atlanta.

Fact: Election officials have said the surveillance video shows normal ballot processing. It is not unusual practice for poll workers to store ballots that still need to be counted on-site at the polling center.

As reported by The New York Times, late on Nov. 3, election workers in Fulton County, Ga., heard that they would be allowed to stop the vote-counting and retire for the evening. So they packed uncounted ballots into suitcases and prepared to lock up. When word came that they couldn’t leave yet, they dragged the suitcases back out and began counting the ballots again.

But that scene of election workers taking out suitcases of ballots was selectively edited and pushed by allies of President Trump as one of the many false theories purportedly proving widespread election fraud. The conspiracists also named the election worker Ruby Freeman as a specific player in this false conspiracy event.

No, there isn’t evidence that Pennsylvania election officials violated state law.

Claim: President Trump’s campaign has claimed that Pennsylvania election officials improperly handled tens of thousands of mail-in ballots in violation of state election law.

Fact: The Trump campaign’s legal efforts to disqualify votes in Pennsylvania have been unsupported by evidence.

The Trump campaign filed several claims in court seeking to invalidate Pennsylvania’s election results, and one ally of Mr. Trump, Senator Josh Hawley, has said he would challenge the results because he believed “some states, particularly Pennsylvania, failed to follow their own state election laws.”

But the Trump campaign has included no evidence that any vote had been cast illegally.

In a hearing on Nov. 17, President Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, acknowledged he had no proof to back up his claims of voter fraud in Pennsylvania. “This is not a fraud case,” Mr. Giuliani said.

Four days later, the judge overseeing the case dismissed the lawsuit. It was also shot down last month by Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, who said in a ruling, “Calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.”

Dave and Mike, as at least a dozen Republican senators and scores of  Republican congressmen prepare today's assault on the 2020 election results and American  democracy, this article from The Onion brings it all into perspective:

Rueful Trump Wishes He Knew Republicans This Willing To Overthrow Democracy Earlier In Term

WASHINGTON—Looking back in disappointment at all the opportunities that had been wasted, a crestfallen Donald Trump told sources Monday he wished he had known much earlier in his presidency how willing congressional Republicans were to simply overthrow democracy. “God, if I’d known how far all these senators were willing to go back in 2017 or 2018, I could have had everything I wanted with no problem at all,” said Trump, who bemoaned his belated realization of how easily the democratic process—which had held up construction on the border wall and the handing out of government contracts to his allies—could just be tossed aside.

“Obviously, there was some kind of breakdown in communication here. If we had been on the same page since day one, we could have skipped the whole 2018 midterm! I could have declared martial law, appointed Republican supermajorities to Congress, and had all the tax cuts and immigration crackdowns I wanted. Why the hell did they wait until now to show their support for a complete authoritarian takeover? Do they feel like they can’t talk to me?”

At press time, White House sources confirmed Trump had asked Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to implement a plan for improved coordination with congressional Republicans during his second term.

Watching the video of the people chanting "Traitor, Traitor, Traitor" to Senator Romney on his flight to Washington this morning is sickening!

So, Mary Margaret,

Are you saying you approve today's riots in the U.S. Captial building?

And isn't that the same Russell James Ramsland, Jr. who was running an illegal fund raising scam in Texas back in 2015?

Some intersting articles in Rueters and the Detroit Free Press about his bizarre mis- statements about the voting results in those counties mentioned in your link.

He used several counties twice and gave two hugely different voting totals in several other counties. (Like officials wouldn't catch the one where he showed had a voter turnout of  something like 700% of the registered voters - really?)

Sounds like that Harvard degree didn't do much for his math skills.

Or his intergity.

I just now watched his tweet from late today. Simply Unblelievable!

",,,,they stole the election. We won by a landslide,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,go home . We love you."

This man is seriously deranged !

Dave - correct me if I am wrong but didn't you have your intergity removed a couple of years back?

No. That was a frontal lobe.

EMERGENCY NOVENA FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:

Recite the Memorare 9 times in petition, and then once more in thanksgiving.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy  protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.

The bald eagle in MM’s post above isn't praying - he's bowing his head in utter disgust at what happened at the Capitol today.

I can't wait for Joe to take office so I can start ranting against Liberals.

But in the meantime, earlier tonight I attended the feast of the Epiphany service at my church. We had a service with an awfully small turnout. How disappointing.

While I was there, my thoughts were wandering all over the place. The day had brought a deluge of thoughts about my loyalties and beliefs.

I was thinking about the baby Jesus and his arrival and life on earth. It ocurred to me that Jesus never ran in a primary, or attended a single political fund-raiser. Last time I checked, he never even got on a talk radio show. And if memory serves me correctly, he didn't even have his real estate license. jeesh!

He never even registered as a Democrat or Republican.

What a loser.

--------------------

Long before tonight, I had long since written my Senator Lindsey Graham off as a total coward. Wow did he ever surprize me tonight with his "enough is enough, count me out" statement. I almost cried. I think he was sending a message to his other Republican counterparts. And I think (hope) they heard him.

Pretty sure this is the first time a president of the u.s. got a timeout. How suitable that this sadly historic day ends for our bratty and soon to be ex-prez with the kind of punishment you mete out to the class troublemaker:  He's banned from facebook and his twitter account is suspended for 12 hours because of posts he made that were judged to aggravate the situation.

"You go to your room, mister, and you think about what you did!"

Reading the Memorare brings back memories. Mary and I used to say one together every day for the saffety and health of our kids.

Ok Dave if that's how you feel you have to turn in your temporary pass to all our liberals-only events - no more "Socialism Sunday" brunches for you! No more Libtard Library privileges - yeah and checking your records you've got a couple of Karl Marx Superhero Action Comix overdue - so turn them in now and begone with you, capitalist pig!

This is in response to Mike M. #8807.  Trump and his supporters take no responsibility for anything they do.  I believe the mob and trump should be arrested and convicted of treason.  Joe
