Jack,

So who is Henry Ford anyway? Some pal of yours?

Francene Maple (Kriegel)

Better late than never.... Thank you Clare, Janie and Fred.  It is so nice to have someone take care of all the planning, decorating and cooking.  It was all lovely.  I am glad I got to chat with so many people.  And so glad the weather was nice for us  out- of- towners.  Great fun.  Thank you again...

John... I am on board for Ford I love Greenfield Village... I do not love camping....

Sounds like fun. I’ll pick you up on my way thru Findlay, Francene. We can find a good hotel to camp at!!

Sorry I was unable to attend the Holiday Open House as it sounds like everyone had a great time and the three hosts put on an exceptional affair. I hope some pictures get posted on the Forum or this website since there are still some of us who do not do Facebook.

It would appear that IC was well represented at the party and in the Forum postings. Dan Cody would have had to tolerate more IC stories if I had been present.

Also glad to see Franny Maple back on the Forum!

Glad you brought that out about Cody. It's sad, Jim, the IC envy that these people are still carrying around with them after all these years. I try not to hold it over them. Face it people: We were the mothership. Clintonville was Rome. I try not to rub it in that I lived on East North Broadway, the very same street that IC is on. but I mean that's basically like living right around the corner from the Vatican.

Of course, you can see what good it did me, but that's another conversation.

I'm sorry but how have we not started a line of high end waffle and pancake dressings under the label FRANNY MAPLE?

I think we are missing something here...

Francene Maple (Kriegel)

Clare,  Yes, pick me up on the way .... a nice hotel I could do.    Tim,  Where were you years ago when I could have started a syrup business.  I would have looked great as a butterworth bottle.

Look at those cheeks. My god girl, Mrs. B'worth has nothing on the Maple DNA.

Hey, I have a birthday gift for you for whenever that was or will be. In line with your always great sense of humor, I give you two names...one current...Bill Bryson (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid)...and a blast from the past, P. G. Wodehouse...just anything he wrote. Both will give you hours and hours of chuckles bordering on outright guffaws...cackles even! Enjoy. And pass the Butter.

Dave, Henry Ford was born in Dearborn, Mi., as a youngster he was fascinated with farm machinery and watches. He grew up and became a machinist. He built a machine called the quadricycle, (four wheeled). He started Ford Motor Company, became rich and powerful. He is credited with inventing the assembly line. As a result, the industrial age accelerated and transportation age began. There are hundreds of stories, books, bios, and stuff written about him and his accomplishments. Look it up.
Francene and Clare, calling my bluff, eh? You're on. I will prepare some info and we'll get this ball rolling.
If you want any reference of the experience, ask Mark Schweikart, he and Maddy came and visited the Ford. I'm sure he'll give you an honest assessment.
The more the merrier. There are various programs and seasonal activities that may interest you. It could determine the when. The village shuts down in the winter, but sleigh rides and carriage rides could be available. More later.

Jack,

You don't say. Did he make any money off the damn thing?

(Just kidding, I've met one of his grandsons at a church out on the Island during our "Concourse de Elegance" a big time annual fancy car show they hold down here on Hilton Head - and, been there done that  at the Dearborne Village museum many yeas ago - very impressive)

-----------------

Tim and Francene,

I'm thinkin" we could use this somehow at the local Waffle House for their Fried Chicken on Waffles special.

John,

I've been to both the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.  It was about 1990 and made the trip with Sue Lally & Mike Boulware along with their three children and my niece.  We did the museum the first day and the village the next.  I think all thoroughly enjoyed both venues.

Jack, I think a road trip like that sounds like a fantastic idea. I’ve been there before but so long ago that I don’t remember the details so much as that it was great. Makes no difference if it’s repeat trip. We will be going with old friends. I’m in with Clare and Francene and anyone else who is opposed to a tent. Nice offer though Jack. wink

I‘m thinking if we do a weekday or two won’t be so crowded. Maybe September? That way out of towners can plan on it. But I’m open to other dates. May is also a possibility. Summer probably too busy or we are too busy. Anyone else interested jump in here.

Road trip?

I thought you all just made one clear across the river, all the way over to Clare's house. I know Keith must live all of 6 or 8 blocks from her house. But, according to sources I have on the inside, he managed to find his way.  (He and John Jackson always were real smart about figurin' stuff out.)

Still jealous that I couldn't make it!

Hey, I got an idea. How about a road trip to the People's Republic of Bluffton? Or even Hilton Head - they got real hotels out there on the Island? And restaurants you can eat in sittin' down. But whatever you do, don't bring your golf clubs. We only got 'bout 35 courses in the immediate area. No sir, don't even dream about bringin' yur golf clubs.

(and whatever you do, "PLEASE don't throw me in dat briar patch")

And a couple o' Waffle Houses.

Why, I could take y'all over ta Savannah and show ya where Forest Gump sat on the park bench. And out on the local course at Colleton River where they shot "The Legend of Bagger Vance". And back up to Port Royal to see where they shot the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company scenes, and into Beaufort where Mary Ann could show y'all where they shot The Great Santini, The Big Chill, and The Prince of Tides. And we could stop somewheres along the way and order "shrimp and grits" - mmmmm deicious!

If you timed it right, come during the Beaufort Film Festival and May Ann might introduce you to a few of her former (Historic Inn) house guests, Andie McDowell, Blythe Danner (Film Festival board members), or crusty, angry Tom Berenger - you know, regualr folks like that. (if she's reading thi s she could probably add a few more names)

Road Trip?  Yea that's it, a Road Trip!     Drive South

BOOM BOOM BOOM!

(ta da Moon, Moon, Moon)

Why do I get the feeling that we are about to hear a major explosion coming from inside the "beltway" in DC?

Will it be like an earthquake? Or a major hurrricane?  Or more like fireworks?

Kinda reminds me of the girls prom dresses - well, sorta.

ONE of these days I am going to get back to The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village, hopefully next year when I visit Detroit ( phoentically  "Dit Troit" ).   Come to think of it is has only been about Sixty-Seven years since I first visited, and about about 55 years sincce my last visit.  I am sure things are a lot better now and they've forgotten whatever I did on those visits.

Joe

If you and Francine and Joe Gentilini didn't spend so darn much time hogging this Forum, the rest of us might be able to squeeze something else in from time to time.

And yes Mark, we like to put lots of r's in "hurrricane".

---------------

Note; on my previous post I used a different Katy Perry "Fireworks" video, but I took it down and replaced it after about 5 minutes. It was a studio version with some social messages contained  (kids with cancer, and the social stigma of overweight teen-age girls, and other subtle matters) .

So I thought it might seem like bad taste. But there was something significant in that one that I would like to point out. It had a wondeful studio effect with fireworks shooting out of her boobs. Now that is a skill that the nuns never taught us and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I mean like, what self respecting person would NOT want to be able to shoot fireworks out of their boobs? Can any of you help me come to grips with this?

Imagine going to a party and everybody is shooting fireworkds out of their boobs and you're the only one there who can't do it. I just hate when that happens!

Hey, David M -- I have not commented in these forums for a long time, but I read everything.  The think that you are projecting  quite a bit here -= Ha!

Just a note to say that I cannot recommend enough having Jack act as a tour guide through Greenfield Village and the Ford Museum. He hasn't mentioned it yet, but a few (probably many, we are getting old, now aren't we) years ago, he actualy worked there, so he really knows his way around the place, and what a fantastic place it is. He was a terric host shepherding my wife and myself about the place for two days. It definitely takes a minimum of two days to begin to absorb what is there. I highly encourage people to organize this possible field trip.

And Jack -- so when are you going to share with us what one derives from this sleeping in the snow, communing with nature,  and commiserating with other frozen manly men? Have you become enlightened, or just lightened by a few pounds from this experience?

Just heard Nancy Wilson died at 81 from a long illness.  I loved her !

I think she grew up in Chillicothe and moved to Columbus and went to East High School.

I may not be as "religious" as Joe about the forum... but I do read it almost every day.  Usually I am still forming a thought in my mind when you have moved on to the next few ideas.

Tim, thanks for the reading suggestions.  I love BIll Bryson, but have not read that one.  I will add them to my ever growing list of "must read"s

What a great holiday party!! Wish I could have joined in the fun.  Hopefully I will be heading that way next September so  please put me down for the Detroit caper, Jack.  Could I maybe hitch a ride with you and Francene, Clare?wink

Sounds like some folks are interested in visiting HFGV toward the end of the summer, 2019. Late summer is nice. Not too hot, not too cold. Hopefully the Tigers won't be in a pennent race. As Mark has indicated, I was once an employee of the Henry Ford. I was primarily a farmer on the Firestone Farm. And I worked the Grist Mill, and in the museum I ran the Innovation Station and worked in Lamy's Diner. To work as a presenter you had to be able to tell a story about every main attraction in under one minute. The really cool thing about working there is complete access to the library. It's amazing. I found and used a lot of imagery for videos I produced. Their image library is phenomenal. The farm was my favorite place to be. I had to immerse myself into the techniques and technology of agriculture in 1870 -83. I had no experience, but I learned. Energy was horsepower, so I learned how to keep the energy going. Neigh dare I say plod along.
Looks like a field trip is in store to collect data. More later.
Mark, There isn't much to say about my experiences in the woods with a group of nuerotic strangers other than that. But I tend to think of it as a leadership experience. It is at the pace I control, I get what I give. If I learn, I know what that is and the environment is safe and trustworthy and non-judgemental. Check your addictions at the door and open your heart.
Thet is a mixture of native American tradition, spiritualism and lore. It's facillitated by Herb Stevenson, a Gestalt psychologist and founder of the Cleveland Consulting Group. He's a corporate consultant in leadership and such stuff. The group is a diverse group of business and professionals, atheletes, musicians, construction, real estate, medicine, retirees, etc. The guys break up into groups and do assignments, then report in. Three days three assignments, three check-ins. Then there is preparing and striking the campsite, and meals. The rest of the time is sleeping or you can go alone in the woods for a day or more. Objectives, vary but the undelying theme is naturally passing from one phase of ones life to the next phase. The ages rage 28-71. It's about being present for yourself and the others, to not be judgemental or empathetic but rather just present. All the while with an eye on the person you are or are becoming or were and want to be. All that and a bag of almonds. What I find interesting about the experience is there are certain experiences that are inexplicable and intriguing, and intense. It'll take your breath sometimes and put you at complete ease. Anything done for you is done by you. There's 88 acres, horses, wolves, a zebra. The food is not all vegan but some dishes lean there. It's all healthy, and filling and Jackie, Herb's wife prepares a few traditional kosher meals. I usually loose a few pounds, with the sweat lodge. In my career I've produced a few corporate meetings, leadership, sales, dealer, engineering, board meetings, training etc. I view this as just a different approach to bringing people together to improve the quality of their lives. Stepping out of one's comfort zone can be as easy as just getting off the couch. My mother used to say "That's my idea of nothing," whenever confronted by a difficult situation like a bull fight or demolition derby, or a car race. She would apply it to anything that might challenge her. I guess I was enough of a challenge for her. I can appreciate that, but nothing ventured... one thing though, one really cannot be afraid of feeling. It's pretty much where the learning is. Okay I'm a little crazy. Or just curious. And with few opportunties to explore, I guess I'll opt for the Jack excursion. Hope this is helpful.

Jack!!

Man, you've been holdng out on us! Your experience at the Museum sounds really cool. Why didn't we hear about this sooner - much sooner.

And your weekend in the woods sounds pretty cool too. I wish I could go along sometime but I live in an (increasingly) older man's body who's spirit is willing but who's flesh is not so sure.

At least when I go off on my Marked Men for Christ weekends we sleep indoors in beds (with sleeping bags) and have a chow hall with prepared food. And we DO have cow bells - lots of cow bells!  Still, your weekends sounds like something I would love to do.

Francine,

There is no timer on when you should post your ideas. Just say it girl!
