Mary Clare Hummer (Bauer)

Hooray!  I will live to hit another tennis ball and go on the class trip to wherever it is that you are planning!' Surgery was a little complicated but therapy and pills are helping everything go smoothly.

Cool Beans!  Donna, do you have a tennis court of the roof?

Mary Clare -- So glad to hear you are doing well. We all hope you heal quickly.

Tim -- there are Fringe Festivals throughout the United States--at least 30 or so in various cities. I have been to the one here in L.A. a few times, and although the quality of shows I saw was good, it completely lacks the scale and super-event vibe you get in Ediburgh. Nonetheless, Maddy is researching some of the other cities' offerings, so I will get back to you if something sounds particularly intriguing.

Wow! That is one of the problems of so many time zones in this group. I went to bed "tranquilmente" and woke up to read that I will be organizing next year's reunion in Barcelona.  Ok, Tim and Dave I accept your challenge and say Let's Do It!!  If Janie and her team help with the organization from that end I will be happy to organize things on this side. Now it is up to all of you to decide.

No tennis court on the rooftop, Clare but I could always find a court for you.  SO glad your surgery went well.

Great photos, Mark. Thanks for sharing.  Anyone who makes it this far should definitely continue on to Ireland. As Tim says it is only a hop, skip and jump away.  Emphasis on JUMP.

I want to take advantage here to say Stay Safe to all Watterson friends in Florida. In less than a week I am reaching out to friends and family in southern California, Texas, South Korea and Puerto Rico with the same message. Entirely too much going on in the world.

After over Forty (40) years I suppose "Tecumseh" in the Ohio hlls isn't as exciting.

When Al, Larry and I met for lunch Monday, it was without Dick McNamara.  He was on his way to Houston to aid/help his daughter.  Keepher, as well as all others in your thoughts.  Also your classmates, friends and family in Florida.

Joe -- 40 years is right.  I remember seeing an outdoor production somewhere down in the Hocking Hills of "Tecumseh" back around 1980, and was quite impressed with it. I am glad to hear that it is still running.

Here's a little Tecumseh related digression for all you history buffs. Did you know that Willam Tecumseh Sherman's original given name was just Tecumseh, not William Tecumseh? He grew up in the Lancaster Ohio area, and his father was quite taken with what he knew of that extraordinary Shawnee chief, who had also lived in that area a generation prior (actually a bit west of present day Chillicothe).  When Sherman was about 10 or 12, his father died, and there were too many chidren for his widowed mother to care for, so some were parceled out to other families in the area. Young Tecumseh was taken in by a relativley wealthy, and extememly religious, family who learned he had never been baptized. Plans were quickly made to rectify this oversight. The priest or minister presiding over the subsequent baptism was not comfortable with using such a heathen name as "Tecumseh," in the service, so he was baptized "William."  General Sherman was always called "Cump" by his friends, which was sort of short for "Tecumseh" although obviously there is in no "p" in "Tecumseh." The name "Cump" came about when his younger toddler sister could not quite wrap her tongue around the pronunciation of  her older brother's name, and the best she could do was to call him "Cump." This then became his family nickname, and stuck with him throughout his life.

End of today's historical trivia contribution. We were asked for historical trivia contributions, were we not? No? Are you sure? Oh well. Trivia happens.

My vote for coolest public bathroom in Edinburgh. Craziest tile-work ever.

The Copper Blossom -- an upscale pub-restaurant in terms of decor, but with normal food prices. Great place.

Thanks for the "stay safe" wishes, Donna. At this point it's headed straight for us.

Last time I needed a new roof, lost a couple of trees, and had to wash up in my swimming pool nad live by candle light for a week as we waited for the power to come back on.

OK, After a year of remaining silent... I have to speak out. Michael, and anyone else in Florida, just leave. Surely you have somewhere you can go... come visit me in lovely Findlay Ohio! I was in a minor hurricane... Celia in Corpus Christi TX in 1970. I suggest you all try to get out.

Good Luck and be safe !

Good advice Francine,

Mike,

I assume you are already in the front edge by now - it's that big. It's just started getting pretty wet and dark up here moments ago in Bluffton, SC (near Hilton Head). Might be doin' a little driving this weekend.

Hi, All,

I'd like to add my prayers and good wishes for all our classmates down south.  These hurricanes are getting to be too much!  My nephew in Houston came through Harvey unscathed, and I have relatives in Antigua in the Leeward Islands, who also made it through with little damage from Irma last night.  I also have relatives in Miami and Jacksonville Beach who are evacuating as we speak.  Whew!  That's a lot of prayers going out to the Good Lord all at once!

Dave, I hope you will be safe, just as I'm hoping our family vacation spot of Sea Pines in HHI makes it through this one.  They had some damage last year as you probably know, and when we were there this summer, they were still rebuilding the pier at Harbor Town.  I love the ocean so much, but you can't underestimate the power that resides therein!  God bless all in harm's way.

For all you Floridians and coastal dwellers,

You may already know this but a tactic we saw at our hotel when we were stuck in St. Thomas during Hurricane Lenny in 1999 may be of help to those who have pools. The hotel staff took all of the outdoor furniture - chairs, lounges, tables etc. - and sunk them in the pool to protect them and prevent them from blowing into windows and other structures. Of course, they were metal and not floatable wood. It seemed to have worked quite well. They also tied down outside hanging lights and chandeliers, palm trees and anything else that could be blown into something else. As I said, you all may know these tricks since you live in such areas.

Then, get out of Dodge if evacuation is advised and be safe!

09/06/17 04:02 PM #1827

Mary Ann Nolan (Thomas)

Jeff and I are preparing to evacuate from our home in Beaufort S.C. The governor has declared a state of emergency and has asked whomever can evacuate now vs. later, to do so.The main reason are the roads, especially I95 and I 75 out of Florida. Florida and Georgia will most likely evacuate before SC.

We are very lucky that our son and his family live in Atlanta, so off we will go. It hasn't been a year ago that we evacuated for Matthew.

I feel very concerned for the many families in SC that have nowhere to go and to make it worse there are no shelters in Beaufort County, only several neighboring counties. They will be using buses for transportation to these outlying counties. The reason being is we are surrounded by water here. Beaufort County takes Hilton Head, Bluffton Flipp Island all of Beaufort. Say a prayer for all the people in the Low Country.

To all of my classmates that have sent prayers etc thank you so much. Being here in Tampa for over 35 years we have not been bothered once by a hurricane but we do have plans if needed. I would love to go to Barcelona for our next adventure. Cost time stay as in details. Dr Jim when we first moved into our present home 16 years ago one of its selling points was a very large pool. Soon after a hurricane threatened and I stored all my outdoor furniture in the pool. I escaped decapitation from the glass table top by the skin of my teeth. The chlorine after time had eaten away at the paint so no more in the pool.

I echo all of the sentiments here on the forum for all fellow classmates who live in Florida and the Carolinas and add my prayers to all of yours.

Prayer for Safety In Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world,

hear the humble voices of your children.

The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order

and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea.

We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control:

the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant,

can awake from its seeming lethargy,

overstep its conventional boundaries,

invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father.

Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid

and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you

to plead with your Son on our behalf,

so that spared from the calamities common to this area

and animated with a true spirit of gratitude,

we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son

to reach the heavenly Jerusalem,

where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

Mary Margaret, and all,

Thanks for the prayer. Do you happen to know any short ones?   Just kidding - really.

Sweet of you all to be thinking of us. I live about 80 feet back from the water with about 14 feet of altitude in a gradual slope from the May River (Jonny Mercer's inspiration for his movie song "Moon River"). It is really just an estuary a short ways in from the ocean at Hilton Head Island. This could get interesting!  Although we had much fallen tree damage last fall in Matthew, we really dodged a bullet. It's the "storm surge" levels that do the most damage.

I had a call from a realtor friend today, saying her daugheter up in Charleston could not find gas anywhere by 2:00. It occurred to me to leave the office right then and go fill my tank. By 3:00 they only had premium gas left and by 4:00 lines were forming at several local stations. Our recent memory of Matthew (which was sort of bad, but not horrendous), and now Houston, has our anxiety level somewhat heightened - and "Irma" looks like a doozie!  Plus I think there is another one (Jose) right behind her. The Atlantic is bathtub warm right now. That's just adding fuel to the fire.

Speaking of fire, you folks in the PNW (Tim,,,??) are having the fire. My grandson in Portland OR started school this week in a hoodie to protect him from all the fly ash in the air. And it was near 100! Terrible for breathing. Maybe those cold winters in Ohio aren't so bad after all.

09/06/17 08:36 PM #1832

James Hamilton, M. D.

The fires in the west and PNW are quite intense. There has been a haze and respiratory warnings along the front range and foothills here in Colorado Springs as well as the other front range cities for the last several days with more to come. Mostly that is from the California and Montana wildfires.

Floods and hurricanes on one end of the country and fires on the other. Not too unusual in late summer but they all are requiring evacuations and causing severe damage to people and property. Lots of prayers are needed! Our thoughts and prayers for all of you in the paths of these events.

Dave, Our fires suck, no doubt about that. But they are nothing in comparison to what you face with this weather that is coming. I am very happy to know that my sister has been rooted out of her house in Sarasota by her daughter and they are heading up 75?? to Columbus.

You're right that it is lucky that Columbus does not have hurricanes and forest fires. On the other hand it does have, for some unlucky people, terminal ennui.  I looked it up - it means a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement. synonyms: boredom · tedium · listlessness · lethargy · lassitude · languor · weariness · enervation · malaise · dissatisfaction · melancholy · depression · world-weariness · Weltschmerz

I recall having terrible attacks of Weltschmerz in our sernior year. Used to skip school and drive to Old Man's Cave. Smoke cigarettes and wallow in "the schmerz".

Everyone should head for Columbus where there will be ample gasoline, hotel rooms, good friends, great food and all things that stop Weltschmerz in its tracks.

Well, the heat in Phoenix can get oppressive.  Anything over 110 is really hot.  Anything under is tolerable.  But the heat doesn't destroy our homes or threaten our lives.  So, all of you in the danger areas have positive energy coming your way from the southwest.  Please keep us informed about your wellbeing.  You are always in our thoughts.

Tim: Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite german words.

I love foreign words that do the job better than any other language, and that one does. Welt means "world" and schmertz means "pain." So that single word conveys a sense of all-encompassing sadness about the pain of the world - being in "a world of pain" - in two syllables. Can't think of an english equivalent that pulls that off so economically.

I'm staying put for the hurricane. Roads are nuts down here. 15 mph on the interstate for miles and miles. I''ve been through one that hit Orlando head-on, hurricane charlie, which came down the pick straight at us like a tourist heading for disney world with the kids. And after it hit I needed a new roof and had spend an hour or so huddled in my closet scared to death, then a week washing up in my swimming pool and waiting for the power to come back on. That's nothing compared to what people on coastal areas are going through and what people in Texas are recovering from.

Speaking of disasters, LA just had its biggest wildfire ever, and it roared past where I live last weekend. Fortunately, it stayed on the other side of the small range that separates where I live from La Tuna Canyon where the fire was concentrated. We were mainly just inconvenienced by the intense smoke, but since it did not jump the ridge, we were quite lucky. The fire has since been contained, so all is well here.
